Dear Kat,

I got caught smoking weed in my bedroom last week and now mymum is convinced I have a drug problem.

I’ve only tried it a few times, but on this occasion my friend gaveme some and told me to take it home and try it. As soon as I openedthe door my mum smelled it in the hallway and lost her temper.

I won’t do it again, but if she is going to accuse me of being a junkie,a part of me thinks it doesn’t matter if I smoke or not.

What should I do?

Shannon, 18

Hi Shannon,

DECEMBER 20, 2012 - JANUARY 2, 2013 THE VOICE 25

IN 2010 he made historyby becoming the firstblack British comic to sellout London’s sprawlingO2 Arena, yet Eddie Kadi

is possibly one of the most hum-ble men you’ll ever meet.

Hailing from north London, viathe Congo, Eddie hit mainstreamheadlines when he announcedthat he would take on the“biggest gig of his lifetime” byattempting to fill the 20,000-seater venue, often frequentedby international stars such asBeyoncé and Prince.

Although a huge star on theblack comedy circuit, consecu-tively selling out the O2’s smallerIndigO2 venue in previous years, the funny man was relativelyunknown in mainstream circles –

a fact that raised a few eyebrowsor two.

His story featured on the BBC,The Independent and ITV Newsto name a few, with one provoca-tive headline reading “The mostfamous comedian you’ve neverheard of.”

But on September 4, 2010,Eddie silenced every single critic.

Granted he was a few thou-sand tickets short of his 20,000target, but his one-man show atone of London’s largest venues, stands as an amazing feat forthe comedian and for blackBritish comedy in general.

“It still remains the biggestmoment in my career so far,”Eddie says.

“To have so many people who

I have never met personallycome out to support me wasoverwhelming and humbling. Thejourney to the O2 was very excit-ing and hectic, but I had a fan-tastic management team in BlackGrape and everyone pulledtogether to make it happen.”

When I mention the word ‘pio-neer,’ Eddie interjects:

“That title never crossed mymind when we were consideringtaking up the task. We just knewthat we needed to consistentlyaim bigger and get attentionfrom places we hadn’t beenbefore. As risky as it was, some-one had to do it and find out if itwas possible. I’m proud to be apart of a team who dared todream.”

Asked whether he ever getsnervous about having to top thesuccess of that night, he pauses:

“That was a significant step inmy career and it has openeddoors that were previously shut,so it doesn’t get me nervous, itinspires me to always aim higher.Every project has a new purposeand the O2 Arena gig served it’spurpose to allow me to do newprojects.”

And that it did. His stint on theeast London stage opened up aplethora of opportunities. TheManchester United fan, who canlist footballers Fabrice Muambaand Djibril Cisse as friends, laterwent onto land a weekly slot onChoice FM, a radio station he“grew up listening to and alwayswanted to be a part of.”

“I’ve wanted to get into radiofor as long as I’ve been a per-former. A lot of opportunitiescame my way after the O2 gigand one of those was a call fromChoice FM to become a part ofthe team.”

Eddie had completed a pilotshow months before the call andhad resigned himself to the factthat he “wasn’t good enough.”However, he was reminded thathis talent far exceeded comedywhen he was offered the covetedSaturday morning slot.

He spent close to a year at thenational station before leaving tofocus on “other exciting proj-ects.”

In fact, when we catch up, heis just coming down from thehigh of completing another sell-out show, this time at Stratford’sSync venue alongside fellowBritish comic Kevin J.

EDnKEV saw the long-time

friends, both from Tottenham innorth London, share the stagefor an exclusive one-off gigEddie describes as “repackagingthe old model.”

He said: “Kevin and I aregood friends and share a lot ofgood ideas on paper. We wantedto bring them to life, but packageit differently to the model ouraudience are used to.

“We’ve both had successfulsolo careers and have travelledaround the world with our set,but it’s nice to bring our audi-ences together and take them ona different journey.”

If you’re planning on joininghim on his personal voyage, you’d better pack your comfort-able shoes; it’ll be quite a ride.

Not content with a venture intomusic earlier this year alongsideUK singer and “mentor”Donae’o, which produced collab-orative effort Hello and sparkedforthcoming single Twister withband Trick The Fox and

Ghanaian producer Kaywa,Eddie has set his sights on thesilver screen.

“I am now slowly falling in lovewith acting and was blessed tobe a part of two British filmscoming out in 2013. The first isIt’s A Lot, written by FemiOyeniran and Darwood Graceand then there’s Gone Too Farwritten by award-winning play-wright Bola Agbaje.”

But despite everything, thecomedian, who will see in theNew Year in Ghana after aChristmas with family, says he islooking forward to nothing morethan good health.

“I hope 2013 gives birth to allthe investments in 2012. I aim toremain relevant to my audiencewhile introducing myself to abrand new one. Good health isthe top of my list, though,” helaughs.

BUFF OR BUSTED?

BUSTED

youngvoicesmagazine @youngvoicesmag www.voice-online.co.uk/entertainment

The fact that you thought it was a good idea to smoke weed inyour house tells me that you didn’t mind being caught.

One of the reasons she may be so upset is because you disre-spected her by bringing drugs into her home without her knowl-edge.

I also understand why you’re hurt that she’s being treating you likean addict, but if your mum feels like she can’t trust you, you mightfind yourself the victim of many allegations that aren’t true.

Work on building up her trust again and hopefully you’ll see achange in how she addresses you.

Think about your actions a little bit more and stop letting friendsinfluence the decisions you make.
