HE PLAYS the'aspiring play-boy' in hit UKweb seriesBrothers With

No Game (BWNG), but actorDavid Avery maintains that hischaracter Marcus in the onlineshow couldn't be further fromthe real him.

“I actually auditioned for thepart of Theo (described as 'thenice guy who always finisheslast') when it came up,” heassures me.

“But they gave me the part ofMarcus and I was like, 'Cool, Ijust want to be in the show'”.

The popular comedy drama, created by Justin Credible (JC),Maverick, Don Kwelu and TheYak - also responsible for thepopular self-help website of thesame name - launched lastyear to rave reviews. It receivedover 10,000 views in five days

on YouTube, has over 170,000video views to date and lastmonth won a record six awardsat the LA Web Festival.

“I knew it would do well,”says Avery, who admits he wasa fan of the of the “hilarious”BWNG blogs before the cre-ation of the web series.

“And I don't mean that in anarrogant way, but I knew that ifmy friends and I could relate tothe show, there would be otherguys who could too. I still wantit to do better and I see it doingbetter.”

Set in London, BWNG followsthe social and romantic lives offour friends facing a 'quarter-lifecrisis' and how they deal withdilemmas that revolve aroundwork, family, friendships andmost notably, women.

After a triumphant first series, which also starred fellow 'broth-ers' Isaac Sosanya, Zephryn

Taitte and Jay Marsh, the cre-ators launched a fundraisingdrive to help finance the nextone. They raised over £3,000 in30 days and will begin filminglater this year.

On the universal appeal ofthe show, the 27-year-old sayshe believes it's down to a win-ning mixture of “good, funnyand original content”.

“It was different,” he says. “Itwas putting a spin on urbanmales that hadn't been put outbefore. In the mainstream workthat I do, 80 per cent of it tendsto be that I'm wanted by policeor I'm up to no good, but thiswas the complete opposite, butit was still representing urbanmales from London.”

He explains: “We're actually abit silly, we're a bit vulnerableand that kind of role is rare and

refreshing. The content wasgood and the message behindit was good.”

Avery, from west London, actively pursued his passion inacting after completing adegree in advertising and radioproduction and discovering he“wasn't very happy” with hischoice of course.

“I think to be honest, actinghas always been my destiny. Inever had the desire to be anadvertising exec; advertisingwas more of a smart thing todo. I've got those kind of par-ents who are traditional andwere like, 'Get your bit of paper'and to me, that made sense.

“I wanted to get some profes-sional training so I applied to allof the drama schools for mymasters. I got into the CentralSchool of Speech and Dramaand did a year there, which Iabsolutely loved. I guess that'swhere it started professionally. Igot an agent, a show reel andeverything started after that.”

The actor has since gone onto land roles in No.1 Britishcomedy The InbetweenersMovie, CBBC's The DumpingGround and has just finishedshooting upcoming movieStarred Up, a gritty prisondrama, alongside fellow BritDavid Ajala.

“Starred Up is probably thebiggest project I've done todate and,

aside from BWNG, might beone of the best things I've done.It was a month of solid acting, whereas all of my other projectshave been quite sporadic.”

He admits that his mixed her-itage, which he describes as“predominantly Cypriot withsome Egyptian,” has openedhim up to a variety of roles.

“I've got a mixed heritage, which is good because I canplay all of these great roles. It'sfunny because not many peo-ple know that I play the role of[Greek waiter] Nicos in theInbetweeners Movie, but I'veplayed characters from a num-ber of cultures.”

The future for Avery, who has-n't ruled out a stint in the Stateswhere his music-producingbrother now resides, currentlyinvolves writing, producing andexperimenting.

“I'm currently writing a show

with a friend of mine about fivecharacters that exist on theinternet and we've got about anhour’s worth of content. Wemight release them as smallepisodes, it's more of an experi-ment.

“I've got other ideas writtendown, but nothing official. I justwant to work on BWNG andother acting projects comingup.”

On the future of the success-ful web series, he says: “It cango as far as it wants to. As longas the writers and the cast keepdoing what they're doing, wecan make it through budgetstruggles or without the supportof a traditional production com-pany. I hope it gets seen bymore people and the supportcontinues.”

Dear Kat,One of my friends told me that my man tried it on her.I asked my man if this was true and he denied it and said my friend

is jealous and is trying to break us up.My friend has never lied to me before, but my sister has said that

she had noticed that my friend had started acting differently as soonas I got a man. I don’t know who to believe, but I feel like I’m in the mid-dle and am being forced to choose between two people that I love.

Help!Anon

Hi Anon,On one hand you have a trustworthy friend telling you that the man

you love has ‘tried it on’ with her and on the other hand, you have aboyfriend telling you her claims are false.

This is a classic case of ‘he said, she said’ and, in my opinion, canonly be resolved with solid proof. Other than her word, does yourfriend have any other proof to support her claim? Text messages, emails, pictures? Ask her.

If not, it makes it difficult to take her word over your man’s. I wouldsay, based on the little that I know, a fair decision needs proof.
