Henry would just have to play by himself. His older brothers thought he was too young for them to have around them and his younger brwas too small to play much of anything.

So, Henry was five years old and just kind of lonely. Sometimes he would play in his sand pile making all kinds of noises with his little tractors and trains. Sometimes he would chase chickens if he thought his mother and dad would not see him. Sometimes Henry would just sit and think, wondering if this was all there was to life. If Henry got real bored, he would often go into the house and ask his mother to read to him. could not wait until he could real books by himself. It looked like a lot of fun.

Do you know what a gunny sack is? “Come here,” said his dad. “I got you something at the auction barn that I think you might like.” Just then, the sack moved. It startled Henry and he backed away. He did not like things that moved quickly. He thought maybe there was a snake in the gunny sack. “Oh come here,” said his dad. “Look inside the sack. This is just for you.” Henry went over to the sack very cautiously. He bent over the top of the sack and just as he did that, his dad shouted, “BOOOOO!” Henry jumped back. His dad laughed and then he dropped the sack and boy, was Henry surprised!

What do you think was in the

sack? That’s right! It was a puppy! Oh, dad, dad! Thanks so much. I will now have someone to play with every day!

And so it was. Henry now had a puppy. He would teach it to do tricks, chase chickens, bring him a ball back when he would throw it. Maybe he would even teach it to climb a ladder and sing. Well, no, maybe not sing. “What are you going to name your dog, Henry?” asked his dad. Henry thought for a minute and then piped up, “Dad, that’s easy for me. I have always wanted someone I could pal around with each day. “

“I am going to name him, Pal”

The Bible says in Proverbs, “there is a friend that sticks closer than a

brother.”

This verse doesn’t refer to a dog but instead tells us that Jesus will always

be with us and never leave us alone.
