Until a couple of years ago The
Italian Job was one of the most popu-
lar rides at Kings Island in Cincinnati
and Wonderland Canada. The ride is
based on the famous lm shot in Italy
at the end of the sixties, and remade in
the American version in 2003. In both
versions, the stars are 3 Mini Coopers
escaping over impossible obstacles. In
the ride, at the end of the track, the cars
that have the same shape as the automo-
biles come out from a giant billboard,as if they had collided against it. The
lms and rides have meant enormous
advertising for the carmaker, which
spent millions to back the lm (but it
16
wont say how many), yet in return
also increased sales by 46%, accord-
ing to data provided by its communica-
tions managers.
Almost 10 years after its release,
the popularity of the lm has fallen.
Paramount, which produced the lm,
sold the ride to the Cedar Fair group,
which renamed the attraction Backlot
Stunt Coaster. Nonetheless, the ride
can still offer an unexpected resource
for companies wanting to promotetheir brand: the billboard destroyed by
the cars and the other signs around the
track of the attraction.

of slow upturn, outdoor advertising is
one of the communication media that
seems to be recovering fastest. This
is due to 2 factors that companies are
very interested in now: the ability to
reach increasingly mobile consumers
and, thanks to technology, the possibil-
ity to interact with them. Amusement
parks have become an important test-
ing ground for this medium, given that
they allow companies to reach millions
of visitors, but above all offer compa-
nies the possibility to use the parks
own creative resources and techniques.
When Disney made Tron: Legacy
in 2010, all the structures at the park
were adapted to recall the lm, so as
to attract visitors to the cinemas pro-
jecting the movie. The groups parks
offered parties, events and settings,
all advertised by billboards, signs and
even works of art inspired by the lm.
Parks can benet from making the
same signs available to advertisers.
In the United States, for example,
according to data gathered by KantarMedia on behalf of the Outdoor Adver-
tising Association of America, invest-
ments in outdoor advertising in 2011
increased by 4.1% over 2010. The cat-
egories most interested in
this medium are nancial
institutions, government
departments and market-
ing companies.
One of the reasons that
makes the medium attrac-
tive to advertisers is the
fact that individuals are more mobile
and prefer bite-sized content, being
used to text messages and Tweets. Bill-
boards t the bill perfectly: in a few
seconds consumers observe an image,
acquire a piece of information and thencontinue on their way.
Advertising billboards however
also offer creative opportunities, both
in their traditional printed format and

Our Swarms (Salvate i nostrisciami).
inclusi i passanti.

as regards digital display.
England has traditionally been a
reference point for outdoor advertis-
ing, and offers several examples of the
creative possibilities offered by bill-
boards. Banrock Station, for example,
is an Australian winemaker known
above all for its commitment to envi-
ronmental issues. To attract attention to
the global phenomenon of bees popu-
lations dying off, for example, in 2010
the winemaker created a billboard with
a giant S.O.S., i.e. Save Our Swarms.
The impact of the message comes from
the fact that the letters are highlighted
by the positioning of swarms of at least
100,000 live bees. Likewise surprising
is the fact that the result was achieved
without accident for the bees or the
people involved, including passers-by.
At the Westeld shopping center
in London, on the other hand, Ban-
rock Station again put up what has
been called the rst living billboard.
This used 800 owers from 14 typi-
cal species of the United Kingdom. In
two months these owered to create
the image of wine being poured from
a bottle. The composition was man-
aged every day by gardeners to keep
the colours and the plants alive. In this
case too, the purpose was to increase
awareness of protected plants from the
United Kingdom.
The billboard for Lays chips en-
tirely carved from a piece of wood, or
alternatively the ad by the Wax agency
on behalf of the Calgary International
Film Festival, showing a face crying
real tears, are other recent examples
of communication with special ef-
fects that can be easily produced inside
amusement parks to attract advertising
investments.
When speaking about innovationsin traditional billboards, the news gen-
erally involves inks and materials that
better withstand the climate and are not
polluting. The problem of consump-

venivano poi mostrati in tempo reale sullo stesso schermo.
tion has nonetheless not been com-
pletely eliminated. The future will be
focused on extremely durable digital
displays able to remain on for days at a
time in any weather conditions. At the
moment in the United States there are
around 2,400 digital billboards, from atotal of around 400,000 outdoor adver-
tising signs.
Some of these outdoor advertising
signs can be nd on the Floridas Turn-
pike, one of the main highways leading
to Orlando, the theme park capital, and
promote discounted tickets, excursions
and even apartments. On reaching the
park, the outdoor advertising however
mostly shows traditional messages by
various sponsors. In the same way that
parks were among the rst to createinteractivity between electronic games
(such as the Nintendo DS), mobile
phones and attractions, they now have
the possibility to create the same inter-
action with billboards.
Already the MGM Grand in Las Ve-
gas has teamed up with MobileStorm
to promote the events in progress at its

night clubs. In these promotions, billboards show a num-
ber to call to receive a text message with special offers at
the clubs. Once received, the same message can be used
to make a reservation.
Bank of America has used one of the giant screens
on Times Square New York to invite passers-by to take
part in a survey using their mobile phones. The resultswere then shown in real time on the same screen. Other
developments will involve billboards in which message
changes based on pedestrian trafc, or screens that are
thinner than a sheet of paper, able to be rolled up, but at
the same time able to display high denition images.
While in the USA technology is seen as a way of in-
creasing the impact and interaction with the audience, in
Japan it is used to carry out consumer research. This ap-
proach is more controversial because it involves collect-
ing data on passers-by and thus creates privacy problems.
The future scenario seems to be what was shown in
the lm Minority Report, where a Gap (clothing brand)sign recognises a customer by scanning his retina and
then says to him Hello, Mr. Yokomoto -- welcome back
to the Gap. How did those assorted tank tops work out for
you?. The rst steps towards creating this scenario are
already in place. NEC Corporations, for example, uses
face recognition technology to determine how many in-
dividuals have watched a specic display, distinguishing
between the sexes and the level of attention paid to the
message. The technology is designed to provide precise
data to advertisers and is correct 90% of the time as con-
cerns sex, while personal age is correct 70% of the time,
with a margin of error of plus or minus 10 years. Thesesigns in particular are located at drinks vending machines
in railway stations.
When a person looks at a billboard or sign, a video
camera captures their image to determine their sex and
estimate their age. Based on this information, the sign
proposes ads on drinks that reect the customers prole.
At the moment there are no rules that establish that users
must be informed when being observed electronically.
A further test of the increasing popularity of outdoor
advertising and the interest in technology comes from the
fact that until two years ago, there were no signs along
highway 101 that runs from San Francisco to Silicon
Valley. Now, on the other hand, the road is full of bill-
boards for start ups trying to establish a brand and at-
tract customers, investors as well as qualied personnel.
These high tech companies, just like parks, can make the
messages even more attractive with 3D images, both to
create impact, and to give a more complete view of the
companys products.
The only precaution involves evaluating all the risks.
Again in England, the Iris ad agency used a 3D display
to advertise the Wonderbra Full Effectbras, and started
distributing the special glasses needed. The problem was
that the billboard was placed in a busy area for city traf-
c, creating a distraction for drivers and, consequently,
having a complaint led against it by the relevant author-
ities. n
