Itisimportanttoknowtheyieldofawelltodetermineifitcanproducethepeakandtotaldemandsrequired.Theactualyieldofawellisthevolumeofwaterthatcanbeproducedcontinuously,withoutdepletingorpumpingthewelldry.Iftheyieldofthewellisnotasmuchormorethanthepeakdemandrequired,storedwatermustbeutilized.

Awellthatonlymakes1GPMcansupply1440gallonsperday,whichisenoughwaterfor4averagehouses.Thatisconsidering75gallonsperdayperperson,or300gallonsperdayforafamilyoffour.However,thepeakdemandwilldeterminethemaximumgallonsperminute(orGPM)thatneedstobesuppliedbythepump.

DomesticSizeSystemsAwellwith6"casingwillstoreabout1.5gallonsofwaterperfoot.Ifthereis100'ofwaterinthewell,thisisabout150gallonsofstoredwaterthatcanbeusedbeforethewellrunsoutofwater.150gallonsofwaterstoredinthewell,willallowapeakdemandof14GPMforalittleover10minutes.Itwillthentake150minutesforthewelltocompletelyrecoveratarechargerateof1GPM.Asinglehouserequiring14GPMpeakcanbesuppliedwithaonepumpsystemandnostoragetank,eveniftheyieldandrecoveryrateofthewellisonly1GPM,aslongasthewellitselfhassufficientstorage.

Ifthewelldoesnothavesufficientstoragetosupplypeakdemands,astoragetankandboosterpumpmustbeutilized.Thesizeofastoragetankmustbelargeenoughtosupplypeakdemandsforabout10minutes.However,amarginofsafetywouldrequireastoragetankthancansupply2or3timesthe10minutepeakdemands.

Somestoragetank/boosterpumpsystemshaveameansofswitchingbackandforthbetweenthewellpumpandboosterpump.Usuallythewellpumpcomesonfirsttosupplywaterdirectlytothehouse.Whenthewellisdepleted,thesystemswitchestothestoragetankandboosterpump.Whenthestoragetankisempty,thewellhashadtimetorecharge,andthesystemswitchesbacktobeingsupplieddirectlyfromthewellpump.Thissystemallowsuseofthestorageinthewell,andrequiresasmallerstoragetanktomeatpeakdemands.

LargeSystemsInlargersystems,suchasacasewherefour,3bedroomhousesaresuppliedbyonewatersystem,apeakdemandof56GPMcouldberequired.Ifthewellcannotsupply56GPM,thenatwopumpsystemwithastoragetankwouldbeneededtosupplythesehighpeakdemands.A1,000gallonstoragetankcouldsupply56GPMpeakdemandsforupto17minutes.Apumpandpumpcontrolsystemthatcansupply56GPM,andstillsafelysupplyaslittleas2GPM,wouldbeneededtodrawwaterfromthestoragetanktosupplythehousesasneeded.Thewellpumpcanthenrun24hoursadayifneeded,tomaintainsufficientwaterinthestoragetank.Thelowertheyieldofthewell,thelargerthestoragetankshouldbe,toprovideamarginofsafety.

DisinfectionWaterinawellusuallydoesnotrequiredisinfection.Ifthewellissealedproperly,itshouldnotallowcontaminationtoenterthewell.Awellisacoolanddarkplacethatdoesnotpromotecontamination.However,anabovegroundstoragetankmayneedperiodicdisinfection.Thewaterquality,temperature,amountoflight,andotherthingsdeterminetheamountofdisinfectionneeded.Somestoragetanksmayonlyneedchlorineoccasionally,anddisinfectioncanbedonemanually.Othersmayneedautomaticandcontinuousdisinfection.

Thiscanbedonewithachlorineinjectionpumpthatcomesonwhenthewellpumpisrunning,andaddschlorineproportionallytotheamountofwaterbeingproduced.
