Macmillan Teachers’ Day Oviedo
Dear Teachers,
Once again Macmillan ELT are delighted to invite you to the training
highlight of the year – the Macmillan Teachers’ Day which will take place
at Ayre Hotel Oviedo (Espacio Buenavista-Calatrava), on Saturday 4th May 2013.
At the Macmillan Teachers’ Day our principal aim is to offer you practical
training workshops that are designed to reflect current teaching contexts,
enabling you to keep up-to-date with the latest innovations. You will take
away with you sound activities and ideas that you can use directly in your
classrooms.
The Macmillan team will be there to give you a warm welcome, present
our new materials and answer any queries you have.
As the Macmillan Teachers’ Day is extremely popular, we encourage you
to reserve your place as soon as possible. To make registration easier,
we have an online registration process. You can reserve your place by
visiting Events on the Macmillan website: www.macmillanelt.es/teacher-
development/events/ and submitting the online registration form. Once
you have registered you will receive an email confirmation.
Alternatively, you can fax the enclosed form or send an email to the local
office, stating your full name, school and the sessions you would like to
attend.

Sessions
Carol Read Creativity and communication through story and drama(6 to 7-year-olds)
This session shows how a well-managed, whole-child approach to storytelling and drama develops pupils’ potential for creativity and helps them to become confident communicators in English. We will use an integrated combination of multisensory techniques and digital resources to explore ways to engage children in relevant issues and to link learning English to authentic culture and real content. We will also explore the role of storytelling and drama in developing positive values in today’s world.
Inma Piquer Integrating language and arts & crafts (3 to 7-year-olds)
Using arts & crafts in the English language classroom can provide a very powerful tool for learning and getting children to speak. In this hands-on talk, examples of art and crafts activities, which allow us to explore these benefits, will be demonstrated. We will also consider some useful strategies to make the most of children’s artistic creations. Some practical activities, which can easily be adapted and used in any Infant and Primary classroom, will be presented.
Margie MarcPassionate about education and language learning in particular, Margie has been involved in ELT for many years in the capacity of teacher and teacher trainer. She has worked in France, Italy, the UK and Spain and with all levels in both the state and private sectors. Margie holds an MA in Teaching English to Young Learners and is interested in materials and teacher development. She has been a teacher trainer with Macmillan English Language Teaching for the past ten years.
Josefina AresJosefina has been teaching English and teacher training for 16 years. Her experience comes from teaching children, adolescents and adults as well as teacher training. She has worked for International House in various schools around the world and given sessions in English language and methodology for Primary and Secondary teachers at various teachers’ centres throughout Spain Josefina has both the RSA CTEFLA and the RSA DELTA and also has her own school which she uses as a laboratory to test new ideas!
Susan Dreger Cool techy tools(8 to 12-year-olds)
Nowadays, it’s a difficult task engaging our digital natives. By using Web 2.0 tools to captivate our 21st century learners, the aim is to engage them in tasks which enable them to be creative, active learners. English has to be used as a means of communicating and by integrating collaborative tools, students are able to create and share their work with others within their class, school or around the globe!
Ed Cousins Play to learn(8 to 12-years-old)
I am a firm believer that a language cannot be taught. As teachers, we can only create an environment in which it can be learned, and build pupil-teacher relationships which stimulate learning. This session looks at practical hints, tips, Games and techniques on how to make learning English a pleasurable experience for your pupils. Many of these ideas will also lighten your workload and help you come up with your own techniques.
Margie Marc Together everyone achieves more!(ESO)
Language learning requires many forms of interaction in which communication and collaboration with others is essential. By engaging in collaborative learning, students not only get to interact with others on a common task, but they also get to pool and capitalise on one another’s knowledge and skills. Collaborative learning techniques can help us build teams and contribute to a positive learning environment in which students thrive, gain confidence and develop as individuals. In this session, a range of collaborative learning techniques to create a positive learning environment will be demonstrated.
Josefina Ares Did the cat get your tongue? (ESO & Bachillerato)This workshop will reflect on what we do in the classroom and try to deal with some of the problems that we encounter when we want to focus on speaking, and their possible solutions. We’ll also look at how to set up activities in order to get the most out of our students, how to create communicative activities and the general principles behind this skill. Our objective is to try and make our speaking lessons more dynamic – difficult but we’ll try!
