It is a sedimentary rock It was formed mainly from sea shells It is the compound called calcium carbonate It is a useful raw materialLime is most commonly used material generally in

finishing the major construction

INTRODUCTION

Varities of lime

Stone lime Magnesiam lime

Physical & Chemical properties

Appearance white powder

Acidity (pKa) 12.4

Basicity (pKb) 2.37

Density 2.211 g/cm3 , solid

Formula CaO

System Isometric

Calcium oxide (quicklime) is produced industrially using a lime kiln

Market avaibility (world wide cost)

72 – 164 $ per metric tonnes India is a major producer in world of lime…. 4.5 – 10 rupee per kg in india

Adding water to quicklime

Calcium hydroxide solution is limewater which turns ‘milky’ with carbon dioxide.

We can write a word equation:

calcium oxide + water calcium hydroxide

CaO + H2O Ca(OH)2

When water is added to quicklime (calcium oxide), the reaction produces much heat and slaked lime (calcium hydroxide) is formed.

A reaction that produces heat is called an exothermic reaction.

or in symbols

‘slaking’ lime

Lime is uses in the treatment of water and waste water. It is used in the manufacture of glass, refractory, sand lime bricks

and paints. It is used as lime morter for mansonry work of buildings. It is used for plastering and white washing of buildings. It is used as lime concreat to make water proof stuctures.

usage

the uses of limestone

Buildings and roads

Glass (heat with sand and sodium carbonate)

Neutralise acidic soils and lakes

Cement (heat with clay)

Mortar (cement + water + sand)

Concrete (cement + sand + gravel + water)

CaCO3

Limestone quarrying provides the raw materials for making many important substances such as glass and cement etc. It also provides employment for people and benefits the local economy.

But what exactly are the disadvantages?

Limestone Quarrying – some disadvantages

An ‘eyesore’ in areas of the countryside

Noise from blasting

Dust etc. from lorries

Loss of habitat for wildlife

Lime vs Cement(comparison)

Crushed lime stone

• Massive lime stone

• Calcined lime stone

Plastering

Plasterwork refers to construction or ornamentation done with plaster, such as a layer of plaster on an interior or exterior wall structure, or plaster decorative moldings on ceilings or walls. This is also sometimes called pargeting. The process of creating plasterwork, called plastering,

Soda lime glass

relatively inexpensive chemically stable reasonably hard extremely workable

Because it is capable of being re-softened and re-melted numerous times, it is ideal for glass recycling.

Lime softening ( water treatment )

Lime softening, also known as Clark's process , is a type of water treatment used for water softening which uses the addition of limewater (calcium hydroxide) to remove hardness (calcium and magnesium) ions by precipitation. The process is also effective at removing a variety of microorganisms and dissolved organic matter by flocculation.
