• Can a district average both semester grades for a final grade?• If district policy allows it, the semester grades of one

course can be averaged for a final grade. If the semester grades are from different courses, they cannot be averaged for a final grade.

• Will Mathematical Models with Applications be available for the 2015-2016 school year?• Yes

TEA GRANT OPPORTUNITY

• Professional Development Partnerships for Advanced Math and Science Courses• The purpose is to implement programs that give

high-need local education agencies (LEAs) and their campuses opportunities to increase teacher content knowledge in advanced math and science courses such that teachers are highly qualified to teach a variety of advanced courses and therefore allowing the campuses to offer more endorsement areas to students.

TEA GRANT OPPORTUNITY

• Professional Development Partnerships for Advanced Math and Science Courses• Eligible partnership is required between an

engineering, mathematics, and/or science department of an institution of higher education and at least one high-need LEA• Application deadline -April 9, 2015• Maximum funding per grant -$135,000

IMPLEMENTATION OF THE NEW STAAR MATHEMATICS

Changes to the STAAR mathematics assessments are based on recommendations from educator advisory committees. These changes are reflected in multiple documents on the STAAR Mathematics Resources webpage: http://www.tea.state.tx.us/student.assessment/staar/math/. • New assessed curriculum documents• New blueprints• New reference materials• New griddable questions document• New process codes document• New calculator policy

IMPLEMENTATION OF THE NEW STAAR MATHEMATICS

Additional changes to the STAAR mathematics assessments are still to come. These changes include:• New specific performance level descriptors• New performance standards

NEW CALCULATOR REQUIREMENT

• Starting in spring 2015, a graphing calculator is required for each student taking the STAAR grade 8 mathematics assessment.• It can be a traditional handheld graphing calculator.• It can be a graphing calculator application on a tablet

(trial basis for spring 2015)

• A graphing calculator is still required for each student taking the STAAR Algebra I assessment.• A traditional handheld graphing calculator is required for

both paper and online administrations.
