SCHOOL PROPOSING THE MASTERÉcole nationale supérieure des mines deSaint-Étienne – Rhône-Alpes Region.

COURSE AIMSThis non-research based graduate programprovides a Master of Science in BioMedicalEngineering & Design. Graduate Students aretaught theoretical & practical aspects ofengineering, exposed to advanced biomedical &design topics and partake in tutored researchprojects or engage in the design of medicalprototypes. This accelerated program isindustry based and has a very selectivecandidate screening process and therefore canbe completed in as little as 18 months with asix month paid industrial placement included. The objective of this degree program andinternship is to immerse students into theforefront of the innovative world of biomedicalengineering to confront them with demandingresearch problems and tangible industrialsituations to better prepare them for promisingcareers in this up and coming field.Carefully planned into curriculum is a focus oncombining and then putting into commercialpractice advances in medicine, biology andrelated technologies. All BME&D students willinterface with clinical, business and researchcollaborators and gain practical experience thatwill aid develop their communication, andmarketing skills, thus assuring our alumnis’professional success.

INDUSTRIAL PARTNERSThe Centre for Biomedical and HealthcareEngineering of the École des mines de Saint-Étienne works with major companies of theHealthcare sector both in France and abroad. Our Industrial Partnerships provide feedback todirect research and important information onthe required skills that should be taught forfuture employees. In this case they furnish aconstantly updated guideline as to where thefast paced medical or bio-manufacturing sectoris going.

Centre for Biomedical and HealthcareEngineering is a member of the followingIndustrial Clusters:• Pôle des technologies médicales • VIAMECA • Lyon Bio-Pôle • Cancéropôle CLARA

ENVIRONMENTThe Healthcare industry is expandingexplosively worldwide and requires increasinglymulticultural and interdisciplinary engineersand managers. Multicultural also means theability to get familiar with working withinternational team projects to providesophisticated and innovative solutions to thehealth and biomedical problems of today. As a multidisciplinary domain, biomedicalengineering is connected to technology fordesigning, improving, and using new methodsand tools. This major industrial sector faces innovation, economic, human and social challenges. Itrequires new and specific customized academicprograms and we are exploring new embryonicresearch themes at the interface ofengineering, sciences and healthcare.

PROGRAMME• One month French acculturation for non-holder of DELF B2

• French as foreign language • Culture and engineeringSemester 1 (Fall)• Bioengineering• Healthcare environment and constraints • Innovation & project management in healthsector

• Year-long project (1/2)Semester 2 (Spring)• International management & Finance• Personalized medicine, elective courses:– Image processing– Biomechanics and biomaterials– Biomedical devices - bioelectronics– Healthcare system management

• 4 weeks hospital internship. The purpose is toacclimatize students early on to understandfirst-hand the conditions in hospital settings

• Year-long project (2/2)• Semester 3• 6 months internship in a company, hospital,clinic or in a research lab

The program includes :• Significant proportion of hands-on projectseach semester

• Specialization in one of the biomedicalengineering areas related to healthcareproposed in semester 2

The BioMedical Engineering & Design programtrains future executives or engineers on how todevelop and produce innovative products, devices or processes for the biomedicalindustry. Graduates will work in multinationalgroups, start-ups, public or private hospitalsector. Graduates will work both upstream anddownstream of the biomedical sector at theinterfaces between the manufacturers and theend users.

LOCATIONSSaint-Étienne campus is at the heart of theRhône-Alpes Region (2nd largest French regionin terms of population), 50 km from Lyon’s citycenter. Gardanne campus, located in the WesternProvence, is 10 km far from Aix-en-Provenceand 30 km from Marseilles. The Biomedical and Healthcare EngineeringCenter at the École des mines of Saint-Étienneis among the newest and most innovative inFrance and is home to an experienced andpioneering faculty. This center is alsoassociated with numerous research clusters, companies and laboratories engaged in anarray of interdisciplinary biomedical &healthcare research and biomed design.Applying engineering, design and optimizationconcepts to medicine is a relatively new domainand the École des mines has risen up to acceptthe challenge. In addition, Healthcare is a one of the maineconomic sectors in Rhône-Alpes area withover 66 000 people and 15 000 students.

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTSCourses are given in English. However French istaught as a foreign language.Students must provide evidence of proficiency inthe English language. This could include:• English as a mother tongue• Sufficient work/studies in an English-speaking country

• Acquisition of an official English languagequalification such as :– TOEFL : 550/677 (Paper-Based) or 213/300(computer-based) or 79/120 (internet-based)

– IELTS : 5.5/9– TOEIC : 750/990– Cambridge : CAE (Certificate of AdvancedEnglish)
