BACKGROUND ON GG – CONT’D

"Gridiron Glory" provides viewers with the most up-to-date and comprehensive coverage of high school football in southeast Ohio and West Virginia and also provides students with "live" television experience and invaluable training for sports writers and reporters.

It is a programme produced by student volunteers on Friday nights. High school football is one of the most important times in young people's lives, and "Gridiron Glory" provides a one-stop half-hour program that will bring coverage of the evenings events.

BACKGROUND ON GG – CONT’D

The Ohio University Telecommunications Center, a unit of the College of Communication, operates two television stations -- WOUB-TV/Channel 20 in Athens and WOUC-TV/Channel 44 in Cambridge -- one cable channel -- WOUB II -- and six radio stations -- WOUB-1340 AM, WOUB-91.3 FM, WOUC-89.1 FM, WOUH-91.9 FM, WOUL-89.1 FM and WOUZ-90.1 FM.

GG “HUMBLING AND REWARDING”

Why Humbling and Rewarding? He recalled his maiden appearance as a reporter, which he still maintained was a disaster: he stumbled a few times in the broadcast but recovered to eventually become the shows producer. The prestige he thinks the show has brought the poor counties in Ohio. People feel immense pride to see themselves and their community reflected on TV. He feels rewarded when he is recognised in public places such as WalMart and routinely at events he and his cast are treated to free stuff.

CHALLENGES & COMPROMISES

1. Lack of Communication: The executives of Scripps College and WOUB must begin to communicate for the enhancement of the student-produced programme.2. Lack of equipment3 lack of Funding

CHALLENGES & COMPROMISES- CONT’D

The host, reporters, camera persons and other ancillary staff must be selected and given all requisite training early so that the quality of the programme will not suffer with graduation and exit from the institution

TURNER’S MAJOR CONCERN – LACK OF COMMUNICATION

1.Lack of communication among the vital parts of the body politic is turner’s chief concern-Between Scripps College and WOUB officials-Between WOUB executives and the GG team

TURNER’S MAJOR CONCERNS –GETTING THE ‘INFRASTRUCTURE’ ON TIME

2. Getting the ‘infrastructure’ on time

Selection of the hostSelection of the reporters and other staff.Acquiring key pieces of equipment All rest on the solid foundation of adequate funding.

LIFE’S LESSONS1. Don’t expect instantaneous results: going through the process is the key.2. Perseverance is among the keys to success.3. Learn to be a team player.4. Learn to work under pressure. GG is “pressure at its highest”.

CONSIDER STUDENTS’ INVESTMENT

1. Students have invested lots of time into GG and as volunteers they do not get the credit from OU as they deserve. Some credit for the time invested should be reflected as part of their grades.

$ REWARDS?

Some monetary reward should be considered for students since any where else there would have been a pay cheque.
