Captain Francis Walter DukeCaptain Duke, a native of Leonardtown, joined the US Army Air Corp when our country entered World War II after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He was honored with many distinguished recognitions during his military career until he was listed as Missing in Action in 1944. In late 2012, Captain Duke’s plane was located in Myanmar.

Honoring All Veterans!Captain Walter Francis Duke Elementary honors all of our veterans who have stepped forward to serve our

country, defend our way of life and secure our freedom. Captain Duke is an outstanding example of

the valor and ultimate sacrifice of many of our veterans.

With the high concentration of military veterans in St. Mary’s County, it is fitting to recognize those who

answered the country’s call and joined in the finest fighting forces the world has ever known.

Our School: Our eco-friendly, energy-efficient school provides high-quality education for 600 students. At Captain Walter Francis Duke Elementary, students will learn to become a part of something bigger than themselves.

Duke Elementary is a place ‘Where Children Soar’!

About Our School! As we honor all veterans and service men and women in our Armed Forces, we have chosen the colors of Red, White and Blue as our School Colors.

Fitting with Captain Duke’s military experience, our mascot will reflect his service as a Fighter Pilot. As part of the Duke family, we ask you to please visit our school website at http://schools.smcps.org/cwfdes/ and vote for our mascot! You may choose either Aviators or Flyers. Voting will close on Wednesday, June 10 at 9:00 p.m.
