Milk sampler
Product data
IntroductionThe Milk sampler is designed to be usedwith the Voluntary Milking System. Typically, the sampler is connected to the Milking Sta-tion once a month to obtain samples. Con-nections are made to the FloMaster milk me-ter, the pneumatic system and the Alcombus. The Alcom bus enables data communi-cation with the Milking Station. Surplus milkis returned to the station.
The sampler can handle many differentkinds of bottles just by changing the sampleholder. In addition, the transparent maincover enables monitoring of the samplingprocess.
To simplify maintenance and service, thecontrol box is opened with a slide latch.

Function and handling
Zero point calibrationAt start-up, the stepping motors move therunner to the zero point. The runner holdsthe flexible tube that conveys milk to thesample bottles. The positions of the samplebottles are calculated using the zero point asreference.
PositioningWhen a cow is starting to be milked, the run-ner is moved to a designated sample bottle. At the same time, the pneumatic tube-clampvalve opens the inlet to the milk container toallow passage of milk from the FloMastermilk meter. There is vacuum in the containerat this point.
SamplingOnce the milking is complete, the samplevalve is opened 5 times to admit air into thecontainer and thereby mixing the milk. Theinlet valve then closes and the container ispressurised; the return valve is opened andsurplus milk is returned to the Milking Sta-tion. The return valve closes and pressuris-ation stops. The container is then pressur-ised again and the sample valve is openedto convey the remaining milk to the samplebottle.
CleaningThe Milk sampler can be cleaned at thesame as the Milking Station, provided that itis connected to the station. The cleaning wa-ter takes the same route as the milk. Therunner is positioned at the zero point andwater is drained through a duct at the bot-tom of the Milk sampler.
TransportationWhen the Milk sampler is transported be-tween different locations, the runner must bepositioned at the zero point.

Operation
Connecting the Milk sampler1. Stop the cow traffic through the Milking
Station. Milking must not take place whensteps 1 to 10 below are carried out.
2. Remove the cover on the milking moduleand place the sampler in front of the sta-tion.
3. Shut off the vacuum by turning the man-ual valve on the sanitary trap.
4. Remove the plug from the FloMaster milkmeter.
5. Insert the inlet into the milk meter. It might be necessary to check this con-nection for air leakages once the sam-pling has started.
6. Connect the sampler tube by sliding theconnector over holder on the milk meter.Use the hook to secure the position. Seefigure 6 on the next page.
7. Connect the pneumatic hose to the socketplaced above the FF meters. See figure 7below.
8. Connect the electrical cable to the Alcombus. See figure 8 below.
9. Connect the return line to the Milking Sta-tion. See figure 9 below.
Note: For proper operation, the return linemust be arranged as in figure 9.
10. Turn on the vacuum again.

VMX Operation
Connect the return line to the pipe on the end unit
The return line must be arranged as shownin the figure above; let it pass under the lockstrap and press it over the pipe end.
SamplingA sampling sequence is normally performedduring a 24-hour interval and stopped after asystem cleaning. In this way, the samplerwill be cleaned after the sampling.
Note: The sampler must be disconnect be-fore milking starts again to avoid milk resi-dues in the sampler during storage or trans-portation
If milking has started anew, a system clean-ing should be performed again before themilk sampler is disconnected.
If this is inconvenient or impractical, carryout the steps under “Manual cleaning” belowin this chapter.
Starting a sampling sequenceSampling is performed by using the touchscreen.
– Press VMS in the top right corner to dis-play the VMS menu.
– Press Milk Sampler to display the Milksampler window.
– Select a sample bottle by typing the bot-tle's number in the Milk sampler window.Number one is normally used as the firstbottle.Use the Clear button if you type the wrongnumber.
– Press Start Sampling Milk at pos to startthe sampling.
Printed reports from sampling sequencesare available by using VMS Status. A reportcontains such items as the date of the sam-pling, cow numbers and milk yields.
For further information, see VMS Status,Program Description.

Stopping a sampling sequenceA sampling sequence is stopped manuallyfrom the touch screen.
– After the system cleaning, press Stop MilkSampling on the Milk sampler window. The runner then goes to the zero point.
– When the runner is at the zero point, dis-connect the Milk sampler from the MilkingStation.
– Remove the sample holder and flush theinside of the Milk sampler. Make sure thatthe runner is clean.

Adjustments
Pressure regulator– Connect a manometer after the pressure
regulator.
– Start the sampling from the touch screen.
– Fold the drain tube to close it.
– Adjust the pressure to 0.7 bar.
– Tighten the locking nut.
Tube wheel– Turn the tube wheel 8 rounds clockwise.
– Pull the tube through the hole in the wheel.
– Let the wheel pull back the tube.
– Check that 250 mm of the tube protrudesfrom the hole in the wheel.

Manual cleaningCarry out the steps below if there is risk ofremaining milk residues inside the sampler. This might be the case if the sampler wasnot disconneted immediately after a systemcleaning.
– Open the control-box cover and the maincover.
– Remove all hoses connected to the milkcontainer, then remove the container.
– Put one finger on the tube wheel to pre-vent it from unwinding too rapidly andthereby damaging the spring in the tubewheel. See figure 1.
– Lift up the sample tube that are inserted inthe runner. See figure 2.
– Remove the plastic silicon tube, comingfrom the tube wheel, from the metal tube.See figure 3.

Sampletube
Continued from the previous page.
– Retract the tube and unwind it slowly fromthe tube wheel by turning the wheel with afinger. See figure 4.
Note: Use a finger to control the speed ofthe tube wheel when unwinding the tube. Ifyou let the tube wheel rotate freely, thespring will be damaged and must be re-placed.
– Remove all tubes that have been into con-tact with milk. See figure 5.
– Clean the container and all tubes thathave been in contact with milk, using ap-propriate detergents.
Note: If the Milk Sampler has not beencleaned for a long time, the milk residuesmight be impossible to remove. In this case, replace the tubes.
Note: When re-assembling the milk con-tainer, make sure that the cylindrical coneson the container and the lid are positioned inaccordance with the figure below.
