MovingWell-BeingWellProjectOverview

IrishPhysicalActivityGuidelinesforHealthcurrentlystatethatallchildrenandyoungpeople,fromtwotoeighteenyearsofage,shouldhaveatleast60minutesofmoderatetovigorous physical activity each day (Department of Health and Children, 2009). The‘Children’sSportParticipationandPhysicalActivityStudy’ (Woodsetal.,2010) foundthatonly14%of ten toeighteenyearolds in Irelandweremeeting these requirements.Whileinvestigating the factors thatmotivatechildren topartake inphysicalactivity, theexistingresearchemphasisesthe importance of developing the fundamental movement skills inchildren. Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS) are the basic observable patterns ofbehaviour present from childhood to adulthood. Irish research has measured FMS inadolescents(O’Brien,Belton&Issartel,2014),andfoundthatonly11%couldperformtherequiredmovement patterns adequately. This is alarming, considering that FMSmasterycan be developed by the age of 6. Current children’s physical literacy is dangerouslydropping to an unprecedented low level. In addition, there are many neuro-cognitivefunctionsaswellasphysiologicalelementsthatneedtobeexploredasthere isaneedtobetter understand the factors leading to obesity and reduced levels of physical activity, while also developing innovative interventions addressing these problems from a newangle.

Thissingular,uniqueandambitiousprojectwillassess3000+studentsaroundthecountry with a view to better understand the relationship between physical literacy, healthrelatedfitness, wellbeingandphysicalactivity.
