Group – 4

The vision of National River Linking Project is about transfer of water from water-surplus basins to water-deficit basins through inter-basin water transfer project leading to transfer of 174 trillion liters of water per annum.

Average data for India-Total flood prone area = 7.3 million hectares-Houses damage = Rs 3.7 billion-Crop damage = Rs 10.95 billion -Public damage = Rs 11.86 billion

Irrigation

Increase in the total irrigation of land. 3000 storage facility.- 35 million hectares - 200 million tones of food

area and 86 % in rural area

30 river links . Canal network of 15000 Kms.- Increase in trade - Enhanced transportation facility- Economic development of the

Environmental cost - Loss of biodiversity - Loss of vegetation - Loss of perennial streams.

Hydro power

Benefits Costs34000 MW of hydropower will be generated which is equivalent to that produced by 34 Tehri Dams.6.2*1000*24*365=Rs 5.43 crores /MW-year. Total= 5.43*34000 = Rs 1.86 trillion /year

Construction cost - 34 billion USD

Constraints

Political Lack of political motivation and socio-economic values . Lack of awareness among public. Pre-built dams and projects . Environment campaigns. Cultural constraints.
