Jobs: Men hunted, fished, built house and scraped animal skins Women grew gardens of corn, squash, pumpkins, and beans. They also made clothing Children helped gather fruits, nuts and berries
Interesting Facts:
Used snowshoes to hunt in the winter and traveled up to fifty miles a day
There was a group of men called the “False Face Society”

Northwest IndiansLocation of Tribe: Ranged from Southern Alaska to Northern California with fertile soil and North America’s tallest trees.
Type of Homes: Solid houses made from tree planks from the large trees.
Climate: Mild with strong wet winds and rain.
Food: Ate salmon, hunted whales and ate various other animals living in that area.
Interesting Facts:
Northwest Indians were skilled wood workers. They made furniture, pots, bowls, and masks.
Families chose an animal as a symbol, totem, and they made masks and carved the symbols in a giant post for the corner of their house.

Great Plains IndiansLocation of Tribe:
Type of Homes: Teepees-could tear down and travel with them
Type of Clothing: Wore bison skins in the winter
Food: Bison- referred to as, “A Walking Department Store”
Weather: Winters were bitter cold, and summers reached over 100° F
Interesting Facts:
The Plains Indians used the bison for food, clothing, tools, and housing
Bones were used for tools, stomachs were used for carrying water and for cooking, and hides were used for blankets, robes, and shoes. Other parts
of the bison were used for string for bows.
Land near the river was used for farming, other land was dry and hard

Southwest Indians
Location of Tribe:
Type of Homes: Adobe houses-made from a clay like mixture that kept the home cool in the summer and warm in the winter. They also lived in communities within mountains and on plateaus.
Type of Clothing: Used cotton for clothing and blankets
Food: Farmed corn, beans, and squash. Southwest Indians had to irrigate or dig ditches to bring water to their crops.
Jobs: Men farmed, made cloth from cotton and older men weaved. Women ground grains, cooked it, and made pottery and baskets.
Interesting Facts:
These Native Americans were called “Pueblos”, which is Spanish for “town”. There were two groups: Zuni and Hopi

Location of Tribe: Western Coast of South America
Facts:
The Incas worshipped the Sun
Everyone in the empire worked because laziness was a crime.
Empire stretched 2,500 miles
They carved huge blocks of stones for buildings without any iron tools
The Incas did not have a written language
They farmed and dug irrigation canals, some were 500 miles long.
Their land was rich in gold and silver.

Facts:
The Mayas built beautiful, carefully planned cities with huge temples
Created a government with a system of laws
Created a system of writing
Developed mathematics
Studied the heavens and created a more accurate calendar than the Europeans.

AztecsLocation of Tribe: Located in Central America and Mexico
Facts:
The empire had 10 million people
The empire also had various temples
Created a system of writing
Developed taxes and used taxes to build roads, canals, and temples
Tenochtitlan was the largest city in the world at the time. It was built on an island in a lake. The Aztecs built causeways to get to the city.
Causeways are like roadways that are raised above water
