C. GROUND WATER

From Tamaraipakkam, Minjur, Punjetti, and Neyveli

aquifer about 35 to 65 mld is being supplied.

Sea water has already intruded.

B. THE VEERANAM WATER SUPPLY SCHEME

About 170 mld is supplied

E. KRISHNA WATER SUPPLY

• 15 TMC is to be transferred from Srisailam

Reservoir across the Krishna river in A P to

Poondi Reservoir

• Maharashtra, Karnataka and A P agreed to

supply 5 TMC each from Krishna waters to

Chennai water supply, in 1976.

• In 1983 A P and T N entered into an

Agreement on the month wise schedule of

supply of Krishna Water to Chennai City

Water Supply.

E. KRISHNA WATER SUPPLY (Contd…)

• The length of the link canal from Srisailam reservoir

upto the inter-state border is about 380 km.

• The length of canal from Kandaleru Reservoir in

Andhra Pradesh to Poondi Reservoir is about 152

km.

• Allowing 3 TMC for transmission loss, 12 TMC is to

be ensured by Andhra Pradesh at the State

border, 8 TMC from July to October and 4 TMC from

January to April.

COMMITTEES

A Liaison Committee has been constituted with the Chief

Secretaries and Engineers from both

Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, to discuss the issues

relating to the project. 45 Meetings have been conducted

till now.

Inter – State Commitee

Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) has

constituted a Committee under its Chairperson with

Engineers–in–Chief of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra

Pradesh, Telangana and Tamil Nadu as its Members, to

ensure supply to Chennai city in 2018. 2 Meetings have

been conducted till now.

ON GOING SCHEMES

A. THERVOY KANDIGAI RESERVOIR

Launched in 2013

The waterbodies, viz., Thervoy Kandigai and

Kannankottai are linked to form a reservoir. It can store

about 1 TMC in a year.

From this Reservoir water will be conveyed through 66

km long pipeline to Poondi reservoir, from where it will

be used for drinking water supply.

• Even after accounting the reuse of treated

are to be identified and executed

Inter basin transfer is one possibility

POLICY OF GoI

NATIONAL WATER POLICY 2012.

Drinking water is the first priority.

It emphasises transfer of water from

Surplus basin to deficit basin for

beneficial uses.

Cooperation from the basin States is

must for the successful implementation

of the National Water Policy.

INTER STATE COOPERATION

SIRUVANI WATER TO COIMBATORE CITY

An Inter State Agreement concluded in 1973

between Kerala and Tamil Nadu for the construction

of a Dam in the territory of Kerala to store 650 Mcft

of Siruvani water for providing water supply to

Coimbatore city. The Agreement is valid for 99 years.

Coimbatore Corporation gets 1.30 TMC annually

(100 MLD) from Siruvani Dam.

The project was taken up in 1977 and completed in

1983 with the cooperation of Kerala.

scheme as a National Scheme and

plan to execute the scheme early.
