Literacy, 400 BCE = Threat to Knowledge

Literacy, 1500 CE = Control of Knowledge

Literacies, 2015 BCE = Management & Synthesis of Knowledge

UNESCO Definition of Media Information Literacies (MIK)

Knowledge, attitudes, skills, & practices required to

access, analyse, evaluate, use, produce, & communicate

information & knowledge in creative, legal, & ethical ways

Encompasses

learning, critical thinking & interpretive skills

Knowledge Abundance

"For the first time in human history, two related propositions are true. One, it no longer

is possible to store within the human brain all of the information that a human needs.

Second, it no longer is necessary to store

within the human brain all of the information that humans need.

Education needs to be geared toward

the handling of data rather than the accumulation of data.”

- Berlo, 1975

Abundance = integration of media into

daily life

…and education.

Structure of Abundance = Networks

Networking: many-to-many communications

Networks are not just for consuming, but connecting

Many-to-many communications allow us to create ourselves as

network nodes, forming webs of visible (& invisible) connections

Why network education?

Technologies do not necessarily change how we approach learning

Top-down knowledge dissemination is no longer sufficient

Architecture of participation

Identity = Price of Admission

h"ps://www.flickr.com/photos/mkhmarke\ng/8468788107

Identity need not be fully public, but should allow in-group

identification

Should scaffold & extend conversations & resource-sharing

@hypothes_is!

Should open new conversations

Digital identity can also allow teachers to model

You shape what they see

There is no such thing as a digital native.

Identity is formed by contribution over time

Contribution = Control.

But the sites of digital identity are not neutral.

Empires are constructed from money, territory, and information.

In the globalized 21st century,

not all empires are geopolitical.

21st Century Fox •  Fox Broadcasting •  20th Century Fox Film •  20th Century Fox TV •  Fox Sports •  Fox News Channel •  Fox Business Network •  National Geographic

Channels •  BSkyB = $73.45 billion

News Corps 2013 •  Dow Jones •  Wall Street Journal •  Harper Collins •  New York Post •  The Australian •  The Herald Sun •  The Daily Telegraph •  The Times •  The Sun = $9.44 billion

Messages are constructed

But not all media & information is coming from institutions

- or via broadcast - any longer.

What places do you live?

Who owns the places you live?

Google yourself. What do you find?

Digital identity can be stressful

But it is a key form of connection.

Sometimes…I’ll choose someone with twenty

followers, because I come across something they’ve

managed to say in 140 characters, and I think “oh,

look at you, crafting on a grain of rice.”

…which brings us to Presence

Online = people on the other end of the line

Learning is Multi-faceted

Presence is Multi-faceted

h"p://www.learningsolu\onsmag.com/ar\cles/761/building-‐an-‐online-‐learning-‐community

Online demands MORE presence

Presence ≠ Content

Social presence = a sense of each other

Support Many to Many Communications

Help students share what they know

h"ps://www.flickr.com/photos/ben_grey/4582294721/

Be vigilant about power & inclusion. Don’t let anyone be taken apart.

h"ps://www.flickr.com/photos/nuwandalice/

Start from a common point & move out based on interests

Think : Pair : Share What could you try?

What questions do you have?
