OUR PURPOSE To foster deep

learning so that

all learners

contribute to the

common good,

address global

challenges and

flourish in a

complex world.

“If we want learners who can thrivein turbulent and complex times, apply

thinking to new situations and

change the world, then we

must re-imagine learning.”

Fullan, Quinn & McEachen, Deep Learning p.13,20175

How it Works: Our Framework, Tools and Processes

DEEP LEARNING: IS THE ACQUISITION OF 6 GLOBAL COMPETENCIES: CHARACTER, CITIZENSHIP, COLLABORATION, COMMUNICATION, CRITICAL THINKING, CREATIVITY

FOUR LEARNING DESIGN ELEMENTS: SUPPORT TEACHERS TO CREATE DEEP LEARNING EXPERIENCES AND DEVELOP COMMON LANGUAGE AND PRACTICES

CONDITIONS FOR DEEP LEARNING: DESCRIBES THE CONDITIONS THAT SUPPORT DEEP LEARNING

COLLABORATIVE INQUIRY:PROVIDES A SINGLE MECHANISM FOR DEVELOPING LEARNING, SCHOOL AND DISTRICT PLANS. THIS PROMOTES WHOLE SYSTEM CHANGE

Global Competencies for Deep Learning – 6 C’sSix Global competencies define what it means to be a deep learner. Deep Learning experiences are engaging, relevant, authentic and build the 6 C’s.

CHARACTER

Learning to deep learn, armed with the essential character traits of grit, tenacity, perseverance, and resilience; and the ability to make learning an integral part of living.

CITIZENSHIP

Thinking like global citizens, considering global issues based on a deep understanding of diverse values and

worldviews, and with a genuine interest and ability to solve ambiguous and complex real‐world problems that impact human and environmental sustainability.

COLLABORATION

Work interdependently and synergistically in teams with strong interpersonal and team‐related skills including effective management of team dynamics and challenges, making substantive decisions together, and learning from and contributing to the learning of others.

COMMUNICATION

Communicating effectively with a variety of styles, modes, and tools (including digital tools), tailored for

a range of audiences.

CREATIVITYHaving an ‘entrepreneurial eye’ for economic and

social opportunities, asking the right inquiry questions to generate novel ideas, and leadership to pursue

those ideas and turn them into action.

CRITICAL THINKING

Critically evaluating information and arguments, seeing patterns and connections, constructing meaningful knowledge, and applying it in the real world.

A Deep Learning Progression is a description of

what a student’s knowledge and skills look like at

different levels as they develop the Deep Learning

competencies.

New ways to Measure Growth

4/19/2019

If we want to see different outcomes- we need new measures…..

Deep Learning Progressions may be used to …

Assess the current level of students on the competency

Guide the design of deep learning tasks to move students to the next level of growth

Measure student growth on the competency over time

Every classroom is perfectly designed

to get the results it is currently getting.- unknown

Whatever the status quo is,

changing it gives you

the opportunity to be

remarkable.

•Engage student voice as co-designers

•Cultivate learning environments to support perseverance, self control and belonging

students, families, community

•Engage in collaborative inquiry with colleagues

•Build and share knowledge of deep learning

Three ways teachers can think about their role to engage and propel the learning process as:

Fullan, Quinn & McEachen, Deep Learning: Engage the World Change the World, Corwin 2018

Teachers’ Voice Teachers Ask for Professional Learning that is Deep

✓Agency in their learning

✓Time to learn with peers and passionate experts

✓Authentic learning

✓Based on teaching needs in a rapidly changing world

Conversation of 300 High school teachers collected jointly by the District and Teachers Union.31

A New Role for Students: Co-Designers and Co-Learners

The new role for students goes beyond the notions of student voice and student agency to combine both

internal development and external connections to the

world.

“…a focus on the 6Cs immunizes and protects

against social and emotional difficulties thus building positive mental

health and resilience… and levels the playing field for

kids from challenging backgrounds.” -Jean Clinton

Equity Hypothesis

Deep Learning is good for all students, but is

especially good for students who are

most disconnected from learning

Precision in Pedagogy

What evidences of

precision in pedagogy

can you note?

1. Involve higher order cognitive processes to reach a deep understanding of content and issue

2. Often include immersion in addressing areas or issues that are cross disciplinary

3. Integrate academic and personal capacities

4. Are active, authentic, challenging and student centered

5. Are often designed to impact the world, locally or more widely

6. Take place in a range of settings and increasingly use the digital and connectivity

Fullan, Quinn & McEachen, Deep Learning: Engage the World Change the World, Corwin 2018

Learning Experiences that foster the 6C’s

Assessing Current Practice

1. Identify examples of ways you currently in the four elements in your classrooms/school and record in column one

2. Identify two ways you could focus more deeply on each element in the future. Record in column two.

Connects people to:

▪ Educators across the globe

▪ Exemplars of deep learning

created by teachers

▪ Collaboration space

▪ Tools and resources

▪ Global experts

The Deep Learning Hub

Logistics - What do schools do?▪ Identify a school lead as contact

▪ Assess current capacity using rubrics

▪ Support teachers to participate in collaborative inquiry cycles using the progressions and tools at least twice annually

▪ Support teachers to submit ratings on one progression annually

▪ Select and submit one exemplar to the cluster annually.

Logistics - What do Clusters do?▪ Develop a plan to select and support schools and School Leads

▪ Plan professional learning and resources to support implementation

▪ Facilitate a moderation of exemplars of Deep Learning from schools and submit up to 10 to the global team

▪ Participate in the monthly Cluster Team Calls

▪ Attend the NPDL Global Events and Regional events as possible
