Department of Microbiology was established in the year 1999 and it is one of the
oldest Department in the college. After successful completion of six years M.Sc Applied
Microbiology was started from 2004. It has well furnished laboratories with all basic and
advanced facilities to cater the needs of the students. The department has well qualified
staff members with the mission of producing intellectually motivated, scientifically advanced
young community. The department has produced rank holders. Our students are well placed
as research scholars and been placed in leading industries.
Welcome to the fascinating world of microbes.
Microbiology is an applied branch of life
sciences and impacts the life of humans,
animals and plants. One cannot imagine life
without microbes. The Department has a
strong commitment to excellence in both teaching and research. The Department is striving hard to provide a conducive learning
environment and a student-friendly atmosphere that facilitates academic excellence in all
aspects of Microbiology. We are committed to produce highly skilled microbiologists capable
of facing the challenges of today’s world. The faculty members are very active and successful
in research, bringing the latest knowledge to the lectures and practical lab classes. We have
an industry oriented curriculum leading to graduate and postgraduate degrees in
Microbiology.
We organized a one day seminar on topic “Emerging Trends in Eco Microbes”
(ETIEM – 2016) on February 20th. Mrs.G.Selva Mangai, Head, Dept. of Microbiology, Alpha Arts
and Science College was invited as Guest speaker.
Over 100 participants were participated and presented their posters and papers. The best
paper and poster was awarded.
The year 2015 – 2016 was filled with achievements, happiness and
memorable events. Our students secured University ranks in the examination
conducted by University of Madras.
N.Fathima Parveen – 15th rank
M.Swathi – 28th rank
P.Meena – 30th rank
The students and staff members were
participated in a seminar on the topic of
“Plant Disease Management” conducted
by the PG Department of Microbiology.
The Programme chief guest was
Dr.V.Jayanthi Kumari, Assistant
Professor, K.R.College of Arts and Science
College. She delivered her valuable
speech about how the plant pathogen
plays a critical role in plant diseases and
management of the plant diseases.
The speaker explained clearly about the
principles of plant disease
management.
As a part of curriculum, we successfully conducted the Extension activity by taking the
students to Ramalinga Adigalar Gurukulam (Home for Children) situated at kovilambaakam.
All the final year UG students attended with the active participation. Students, staffs
provided stationary items to the children. Our students entertained the children by singing
songs and dancing. Some of our students prepared foods and they provided to the children.
The children from the home chanted prayer for the students which made us so very
emotional. Some of our staffs gave clothes to the children, which made those children were
happy. Some of the children interacted personally about their life. Our students gave a
speech to those children. Though the day was much emotional it was an eye-opener was us.
The final year students
have participated in the T-shirt
painting and poster presentation
events in the intercollegiate
competition “Microorganism 15”
organized by Dr.MGR Janaki

event.
The add on course for I M.Sc., Microbiology on the topic “ADVANCED MICROBIAL
TECHNIQUES”. The main objective of the course explains the basic techniques necessary to
carry out microbiology experiments safely and effectively, is intended as a guide for teachers
and technicians.
Industrial visit is considered as one of
the tactical methods of teaching. The
main reason behind this industrial visit
was to let students know things
practically through interaction, working
methods and employment practices.
Moreover, it gives exposure from
academic point of view. Main aim of
industrial visit is to provide an exposure
to students about practical working
environment. They also provide
students a good opportunity to gain full
awareness about industrial practices.
Mushroom cultivation was conducted as an Add on course for III B.Sc., Microbiology students
during the academic year 2015-16. This course was very helpful for the students as initiative
process for their self-employment.
All students actively participated and they were motivated for being an entrepreneur in
this field. This course had encouraged the students to do this mushroom cultivation in their
home itself, will helpful for the future. After completion of the course, feedback forms were
collected from the students.
The alumni talk by our old students were organized for the current batch for the motivation
of the students. The opportunities and excessive advancements opened in the field was

which have been constantly of great support. Our department has moulded me to become a
good individual and I'm sure it's really a boon to all our students too".
The staff members were actively participated in the
events organized by the Dept. of Microbiology. The
research papers were presented by them in the
seminar. The workshops experience also helped them
in understanding the technical details of the advanced
techniques in the field of microbiology.
The students were benefitted by the add
on course on topic “Advanced Microbial
Techniques” for enhancing the technical
knowledge for their future.
Also they are educated with practical
learning by industrial visit to Chellam Aqua
industries.
Hands on practice on various techniques
were given to the students. It helps them to
impart their practical knowledge in the
research and development.
The knowledge in science is updated with the help of guest speakers on topics Plant
disease management, Diagnostic methods in parasitic infections, STDs, Arthropod Borne
diseases and Application of radioisotopes in medicine and analytical techniques.
Mrs.R.Azhagu Senthil Radha published a research paper on the topic “The heamatological
changes of fresh water fish Cyprinus carpio var. communis exposed to acute aluminium sulphate
