New Delhi: The governmentis reviewing the tax-free medi-cal reimbursement limit, cur-rently fixed at Rs 15,000 a year,besides looking at making itmore attractive for individu-als to buy medical insurancepolicies.

Sources said both the is-sues are being looked at aheadof the Budget with some indi-

cating that there is a possibili-ty that the limit on tax-freemedical reimbursement fromemployers may be raised to Rs25,000 a year, given the risingmedical costs in the country.

Similarly, the government,which allows a deduction of Rs15,000 a year for medical insur-ance premium paid forspouse, children as well as thepolicyholder, is looking at en-couraging individuals to buy a

higher cover. In case of seniorcitizens the limit is Rs 20,000.

The review comes as thelimits were fixed several yearsago and costs have gone up sig-nificantly since them. For in-stance, in the wake of risingclaims, insurance companieshave increased the premiumon medical insurance on sev-eral occasions over the pastfew years.
