A New Medium
Who Remembers when this came out?
HUGE sensation - Interactive Multi-Media
Put Encyclopaedia Britannica out of business
@mattmiesnieksmatt@dekko.co
A New Medium
Then another new medium came along
Wikipedia not taken seriously at first
It was a new App built to take full advantage of the New Medium
@mattmiesnieksmatt@dekko.co
A New Medium...?
...or a Gimmicky way to display Information?Is AR a New Medium?
It’s definitely not taken seriously yet
@mattmiesnieksmatt@dekko.co
What’s “Current Gen”?
Marketing Gimmicks
Why do we need Next-Gen AR ?
Because NO ONE uses Current-Gen AR
@mattmiesnieksmatt@dekko.co
What’s “Current Gen”?
Science Projects
@mattmiesnieksmatt@dekko.co
What’s “Current Gen”?
Self Promoters
@mattmiesnieksmatt@dekko.co
But Seriously.... why isn’t AR being used today?
Markers aren’t worth printing
@mattmiesnieksmatt@dekko.co
But Seriously.... why isn’t AR being used today?
Hands-Up Display is Silly
@mattmiesnieksmatt@dekko.co
But Seriously.... why isn’t AR being used today?
Doesn’t work indoors
@mattmiesnieksmatt@dekko.co
But Seriously.... why isn’t AR being used today?
Inaccurate Sensors (esp GPS)
@mattmiesnieksmatt@dekko.co
But Seriously.... why isn’t AR being used today?
Disconnected & Floating Content
@mattmiesnieksmatt@dekko.co
But Seriously.... why isn’t AR being used today?
Poor Experience DesignThe prior 5 Blockers can be solved by technology (and are in the process of being solved)
This one requires a New way of Thinking
@mattmiesnieksmatt@dekko.co
The Medium of Reality is
Experientialnot
Informational
so build Products that give people experiences they can’t get any other way
@mattmiesnieksmatt@dekko.co
This type of AR Experience...
@mattmiesnieksmatt@dekko.co
Reflects this type of thinking
Trying to mash the new medium into the old
@mattmiesnieksmatt@dekko.co
We need more like this
@mattmiesnieksmatt@dekko.co
or even better
Entertainment industry will lead, as they understand experience creation
Ability to attract Attention (esp Visual) and engage emotions are key skills
Think of Gamification as a crude baby-step towards experiential engagement
@mattmiesnieksmatt@dekko.co
The Web is Information
Reality is Experienced
Nearly all current technical thinking (esp in Bay Area) around AR is treating it as an Information Presentation layer on reality. This is missing the opportunity entirely.
Think “enhancing a real experience”, not “the Web in your CameraView”
@mattmiesnieksmatt@dekko.co
Next-Gen AR needs 2 things:
1. Experience Designers
• Changing user behavior is harder than designing algorithms
• Create AR Experiences from a Users perspective
• Engage the senses emotionally
AR Products need to be user-experience (not UI) informed & led
No more science projects or gimmicks
@mattmiesnieksmatt@dekko.co
2. Some new (hard) technology:
•
•
•
Not much else as far as we can tell
Next-Gen AR needs 2 things:
Just getting these 3 working together on a smartphone is hard
Various other components to support the experience which already widely exist
