• The SAFARI-1 research reactor, a 20MW tank-

in-pool type reactor, was commissioned in

1968 as a light-water moderated and cooled,

beryllium and water reflected research

reactor built for scientific research. This

facility is operated by the South African

Nuclear Energy Corporation (Necsa)

Vaalputs National Waste Repository- Located in the Northern Cape.

Low and intermediate level waste disposal facility in South Africa. The

Vaalputs National Radioactive waste disposal facility is located in the

Northern Cape. Management of this facility will in the future be

handed over to the recently established National Radioactive Waste

Disposal Institute which was established through the National

Radioactive Waste Disposal Institute Act, No.58 of 2008, to manage

radioactive waste disposal on a national basis.
