I have just returned from a five-day trip to the Holy Land - spending three nights in Bethlehem and two nights in Jerusalem. I joined the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre Pilgrimage as I am a one of their members. The Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre is one of the oldest orders of chivalry in the world. It is dedicated to the support of the Holy Land sites and the people who live there – to whom we refer to as ‘The Living Stones.’ So, last Sunday I attended Mass in the Seminary in Bethlehem and met some of the young men who are training for the Priesthood. You are probably aware that most of the holy sites in the area are looked after by the Franciscans, yet it is diocesan priests who looks after the everyday needs of the parishes and parishioners in the land of our Saviour. On Monday morning, at 6:30am, we gathered together as pilgrims to follow the Via Dolorosa and pray the “Stations of the Cross”. I offered my prayers particularly for the sick and housebound of our two parish churches of St George’s and St Teresa’s. On Tuesday, after a formal procession into the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, I had the privilege of seeing the place where Christ is buried. I was honoured to be able to celebrate Mass in a special chapel dedicated to the Crusaders and was just a few yards away from Calvary and I specifically prayed for our Taunton parish and the needs of all who regard both of our churches as their parish. Before leaving on Wednesday, I celebrated Mass at the Con Cathedral, which is situated in the Latin Patriarch compound in Jerusalem. It is called a Con Cathedral because it shares the role of the bishop’s seat (cathedra) with the Church of the Holy Sepulchre which is approximately half a mile away. At that Mass, I mainly prayed for the young people of our community especially those who are due to make their
First Holy Communion in a few week’s time. Mgr Bernard
