NPC Extension Process: How to Grow your Panhellenic

Panhellenic and the fraternity/sorority advisor in the extension process

Program Objectives

Overview of the Extension Process• Exploratory committee & data collection• Proper Authority approval• Determine your timeline – be realistic!• Announcement of your extension opening• Receipt and review of materials• Presentations & selection• Marketing for new group• Colonization

How to Get Started• Exploratory Committee formed• Do your research – collect & review data to see trends &

projected growth • Is there local sorority or interest group interest in NPC

affiliation?• Notify your NPC Area Advisor• Findings are presented to your PH – motion to expand

moves the process forward

What Data Should be Collected?

• Size of current chapters vs. total• Recruitment trends and stats for past 5 years• Institutional growth projections• Interest in your Greek system• Potential obstacles (administration, housing, etc.)• Current chapter sizes manageable?• Will the addition of a new group enhance the

CPH/campus?

What Does the Data Tell You?

• If no, what can we do to boost our current system?• Review of total• Develop/revise CPH marketing plan (image, messaging,

target audience)• Does current recruitment style/system work?• If yes, begin the NPC extension process

Extension Motion

• Delegates take motion back to their chapter for discussion and vote

• Include/update your local chapter advisors & NPC Delegates/HQ personnel on discussions

• Delegates bring vote of their group back to PH at a subsequent meeting

• Voting is one vote per NPC member group

Vote is YES – Now What?

• Contact the NPC Extension Chairman – need copy of meeting minutes with the vote indicated

• Determine how you will advertise/announce your extension opening

• Inactive/dormant chapter consideration and/or if there is a recolonization agreement on file

Panhellenic Extension Responsibilities• Determine the main institutional contact• Determine a timeline for the process• Select the Extension Committee – makeup• Determine criteria/qualities you want in a new group –

use that as basis for evaluation• Will you allow Exploratory Visits?

– No student contact during these visits

Steps for Successful Process

• Schedule Presentations• Determine Logistics

– Facility booking – Budgeting – Housing– Additional Items

• Select group to colonize • Colonization – Panhellenic assistance

SUPPORTING THE EXPANSION IS KEY!

Once Your Group is Selected …

Getting the Word Out

• Putting news on Panhellenic and university website• Showing off the new group at Orientation sessions• Invite the new group to recruitment to observe and talk to

withdrawn PNMs• Create Ambassadors• Locations where non-Greeks are• Strategy: “Do you have a girlfriend?”

Share Your Success Secrets

• Banners• Socials/Dances• Recruitment Techniques• New Member Activities• Recruitment Assistance

EXPANSION IS A PROCESS THAT REQUIRES MUCH HARD WORK AND DEDICATION, BUT IT IS ALSO VERY REWARDING. IT TAKES AN ENTIRE COMMUNITY TO MAKE A NEW GROUP SUCCESSFUL.
