A STRONG ANSWER TO THE I

BUSINESS MENS DOCUMENT-

To the Citizens and Voters of MarionCounty Florida-In view of the fact that a number

t of the merchants and business men ofOcala have addressed a communica-tion

¬

f to you deploring the condition oftile county and mourning over the costmt an election we wish to analyze the

t object and purpose of their mournfulI petition-

In the first place the petition wasl gotten up by lawyers hired and paidi by the barrooms for the job In the

econd place the petition pretends toappeal to voters against calling theelection but in fact it is gotten up

f entirely for a campaign document to-t try to Influence the people to vote the

wet ticket They knew that when theI article was written we had the peti-tion

¬1 calling for an election already

toned by more than onefourth of theregistered voters of the county andthey knew the law relative to such a I

t petition vI

They say elections are costly yett the very men who wrote the mournfulf document and almost everyone who

signed it was red hot for an electiont on bonding the county when it was

conceded from the very start thatF bonds would be defeated Why didntt thy cry out then against the expenser of an election 1I They say elections are costly yetr they say they will put the county to-t the expense of another election two

yrs from now and a constant ex-

pense¬

every two years unless thecounty goes back wet They here un-mindfully

¬

i admit that the county willKO dry Although they weep over theexpense of an election they are will-

ing¬

to call them any time when theyare in their own interest I want to-

t ay to the citizens of Marlon countythat the men who originated this

Business Mens appeal the barroommen and a few others care no more

I

for the expense of this election thanthey do for the expense of overcharg-ing

¬

for bad whiskeyThey say that If the revenue derived

fcfrom the licensed saloon be lost it willbe necessary to materially Increase thetax rate on property They know thisto be untrue mid I say thlh from the

r

authority and testimony from twentyodd counties of this state We nowhave 32 dry counties In Florida and Ihave testimony from more than 20 ofthem all certifying that closing thesaloons did not Increase the expense-one cent In the county and most ofthem declare that It lessened the exl ense from S500 to SrOOO per year

Why Is it that these business menwill not take the statements from theofficials of these counties hut con ¬

tinue to make statements that theycannot prove We will give to anyman a reward of S T 0 who will prove-

b ft majority of the county officersand the business men of any county inthis state that doing away with thesaloons has Increased taxes one cent

Suwannee county declares that hercounty expenses are more than 1000

k lwar year less than when she had openI saloons

Lake City says that she saves sincethe town and county went dry more-

than J100 per month on police hireHamilton county says that In two

years the county saved In court ex-

penses¬

alone 532955 These savingswould soon build a court house inOcala

Alachua county officials certify thati

the expenses of the courts are 1045

less per year than when the countywas wet This was over and aboveall costs and rewards Many othercounties give the same statementsCan you tell me why these men turn-a deaf ear to such facts

These gentlemen for whom we have1 great respect have made a mistake1 They have conveyed the Idea that as

business men they should be consultedi above everybody else In a movement

touching the moral and financial In-

terest¬

of the county While every bus-

iness¬

man Is a blessing in his placeB nd has a right to express his opin-ion

¬

i an a citizen yet It Is going tooi far when Ve say that business men as-

ar claw should be consulted before weInaugurate a reform Even the king-

s served by the neldantl farm And1 we believe that the man who toils In

the field should Ih consulted as muchI as the business man

To read their petition one not ac-

They say that the degree of sobriety-and good order prevailing here is evenhigher than most prohibition towns ofsimilar size can show To this wemake a flat denial and they cannotprove It We note however that theDunnellon document could not muster-up courage enough to make the sameclaim Respectfully-
