OnNOAAShipOkeanosExplorer,thedifferentrolesandresponsibili5es,robo5cequipment,soZwaretools,andopera5ngprocedurescons5tutean"explora5onsystem"thatallcometogetherduringadivetomeetthescienceobjec5vesofthedive.

IntheControlRoom,threeRemotelyOperatedVehicle(ROV)pilotsaremonitoringandcontrollingDeepDiscoverer(D2)andSeiriosthrustersandcameras,collabora5ngwiththevideographerwhozooms,focuses,andadjustsbrightnessandcontrast.Seatedintherowbehindthepilots,thetwoscien5stsonboard(called"watchleads")arespeakingontheteleconwithscien5stsonshore,whilerespondingtochatroom"entries"andbiologyandgeologyiden5fica5onsusingawebbrowsertool.Duringmostofthedive,thescien5stsareconversingaboutwhattheyareseeing,wheretheywanttoexplorefurther,andwhattosample.Theseinterestsarecommunicatedbyaninternalintercombetweentheon-boardscien5stsandtheROVpilot.ThepilotisusingD2'sthrusters,posi5oningtheROVaswellasitsmaincameraatitemsofinterest.Hesignalstothevideooperatorwhento"comein"ordoa"par5al"(zoom).Thisopera5onisseamless,withthepilotsandvideographeroZenknowingfromexperiencewhattofocusonandforhowlong.
