Reminder of the Classroom Rules:1. What is the first thing

everyone should do when they arrive in the classroom every morning?• check schedule• Unpack knapsack…take

out materials needed, homework & pencil case

• Put knapsack on bottom shelf and lunch box in front of window

• Begin mission on board.

What formula does this class need to follow in order for this class to be a success?

2. When Ms. Catherine is ready to start class, what should everyone do?

• Start using their inside voices (inside your head) so that Ms. Catherine can successfully give directions to the class and we can get started.

3. During Ms. Catherine’s class, if you have a question or comment to make, what should you do first?

• Raise your hand!!

4. What if Ms. Catherine is in the middle of giving instructions…do you want to interrupt her?

No! (There is a possibility that she will answer your question)

5. If you are afraid you will forget your question, what should you do?

• Write it down!

6. Independent Reading:• By group, go up and take your independent

reading book out to read during the next 15-30 minutes.

• Have your red Reading Journal on your desk where you can write a Reading Response about your reading.

• Use your inside voice while you read, only maybe using your whisper voice if you want to ask your neighbor a question.

7. Lunchtime:• By group, go up and take

out your lunch. • During lunchtime, Ms.

Catherine will be reading to the class.– If you are good all week,

maybe she will give you a free lunch on Fridays!

7. When Ms. Catherine announces it is time to go to our Specialty Class:• Clean up all lunch garbage from desk and floor surrounding desk.• Get in line outside the classroom in size order…before Ms.

Catherine has to come outside to remind us!• Walk QUIETLY to our specialty class…making sure that we stay in

line…in size order

8. After recess, what instructions must everyone follow?• Copy homework assignment from board into Homework journal.• Take all notebooks out of desk and either pack in knapsack or

put on shelf.• Return independent reading books to proper bins.• Make sure that all garbage is in the garbage…work with your

partner to make sure that your desk area is clear of anything that might be garbage or anything that might belong to either of you before you leave the classroom for Ms. Karina’s classroom.

8. At the end of the day, what instructions should everyone follow?• Just as you did before switching classrooms,

everyone needs to clear out their desks…all notebooks either on shelf or in knapsack.

• All garbage off desk and floor and into garbage pail.

• Pack up knapsack and take charge of sweatshirts and jackets.

• Get into line to wait for the music.

SHOULD ANYONE EVER LEAVE THE CLASSROOM BEFORE THEY HEAR THE

MUSIC AT 2:00?

NEVER!!!

• Ms. Catherine reminds you of the rule you forgot.

• Then Ms. Catherine sends home a note…

9. What happens when you choose not to follow these instructions?

Writing Mini-LessonInteresting Questions Lead to

Interesting Findings• What should a good biography

include?

• Suggestions?• Interesting & insightful information

about its subject.• How do biographers gain this

information?

Let’s consider what questions the biographer must have asked in order to gain the information needed for these first 4 pages…1. What was the environment like

where my subject grew up or lived?

2. How was my subject influenced by his or her environment?

For this more intimate page about the subject’s childhood…what do you think our author needed to ask?3. Who had a major influence in my

subject’s life? 4. What obstacles did my subject

overcome?

Here we read about a difficult time for our subject and his family.5. What character traits or outside

factors helped my subject through the obstacles in his life?

6. What good or bad decisions did my subject make?

Here are some more good questions to research…7. How was my subject affected by

these decisions?8. What motivated or inspired my

subject?

Tonight’s assignment…• Imagine you had the chance to

interview your Peacemaker.• Write a draft of their biography

based on the answers to these questions.

• Research their motivations and influences from their childhoods.
