From the Editor
Welcome to the October edition and thanks to Heather Westron and Ryan Sheader for their contributions. We have made a good start in the cross country leagues, especially the East Yorkshire. I look forward to an increased participation in the leagues now that most of the club’s major road races have passed. Report and photos of the Yorkshire Coast 10K will be in the November Edition, as I have queries re some participants, and I was already behind my mid month publishing target. The latest Rankings List reflects greatly increasing participation. If you are aware of any omissions, please let me know. A common cause is results for races prior to joining the club.

Mini Biography
Heather Westron
Years as a runner; I started from zero in October 2013.
Best performances; 33rd of 37 women in The Lakesman iron distance triathlon in 2016 (15 hours 22min) and 2nd in Scarborough AC Turkey Carpet Handicap in 2017.
Favourite race; The Lakesman. It was so pretty. Although it was a new race in 2016, it's grown lots already (sold out for 2018) I really hope they can keep the Cumbrian local race feel, with the athletes at the centre. The race organisers are super encouraging, even for those of us who fear cut off times.
Favourite female athlete; Nicky Spinks is pure toughness. She is a breast cancer survivor and when I met her she told me that she never has the full set of toenails. A completely normal and modest woman, who has achieved super human feats of endurance. She holds the women's record for Lakeland Fells in 24 hours (and is 4th overall). Nicky is the only woman to have done a Double Bob Graham Round (84 Lakeland fells in 48 hours). At 49 years of age, her Double Round in 43hr 30min smashed the previous overall record.
Favourite male athlete; Bailey Matthews is amazing, just glows with positivity. I was marshalling when he did the Castle Howard Triathlon in 2015, he must have fallen a dozen times but he just kept going. The little boy with cerebal palsy was always going to finish last but it didn't matter, he did it. We all have our problems but wouldn't the world be better if we could all 'be more Bailey'.
Targets; To still be running (and all the other sports I do) when I'm Mick Thompson's age.
Ambitions; To make my veterinary business a success so I can have more time for training.
Funniest moment; My whole sporting career has been a bit of a laugh.
Mini Biography
Ryan Sheader
Years as a runner; It'll be just under 2 years. I could never run any long distance, I couldn't run to the bus stop, only 100m or 200m sprints and that was it, I only started running on my own in Summer of 2015, and I was useless, to improve cardio to help with my stamina for rowing at the rowing club, and occasionally we ran at the club when weather didn't allow us to row. I stuck with it and built myself up and Carina Pelucci who was also a member of the rowing club suggested I come to SAC training, and I did so in Feb 2016 I think, and officially joined that year, and have never looked back. (Until now - HaHa)
Best performances; Great North Run 2017 - Finished in 1hr 44min 50secs and got 12mins 39sec off last years time, and generally just adored the experience and atmosphere. Tholthorpe 10km 2017 the week before GNR (3rd September), when I managed a new 10km PB of 45:49, getting 1min 14secs off previous time from York 10k in August......I dunno what happened, but I just seemed to be able to push the pace that day, without issue.
Favourite race; I adore the Great North run, for the amazing support and atmosphere all the runners receive, I made the silly mistake last year of wearing headphones for a small part of it (never again). This time round, I was on the bridge as the red arrows flew over, which moved me immensely. Also, hearing everybody shouting you by your name, and offering support in every possible way, verbal and in the form of sustenance, is lovely. Just like last year, I found myself crying during parts of the race and at the finish briefly, but particularly at the top of the final hill as I got my first glimpse of the sea at South Shields. I also adore the Scarborough 10km, it will always have a special place in my heart, as being my first ever "race" and by far the most scenic and beautiful 10km route there is.
Favourite female athlete; Paula Radcliffe - To run a full marathon in 2hours 15 mins, just astonishes me.
Favourite male athlete; Tom Brickman - A local Scarborough guy aged 23, I have never met him or know him but he embarked on a 9 marathons in 9 days challenge in aid of St Catherines Hospice, after they provided end of life care to his Granddad. He set a target of £11,000 which would be enough to run the entire hospice for a day, that day would be dedicated to his Grandad. His story touched me a bit, as my Nana and Uncle both received end of life care in St Catherines, so I have the upmost respect for him and his challenge and chosen cause. He really inspired me, and would LOVE to meet him one day.
Targets; To run a 10km in under 45 minutes, and even try get near to 40 mins in time, and try improve on my parkrun PB of 21:26, and having seen the York Marathon runners finish recently, I may even make a full marathon a target of mine, when or where is all to be decided.
Ambitions; To try and stay injury free and to enter as many different races of various distance and locations (including abroad) as possible, to see all the sights of various places, soak up the atmosphere and enjoy each and every experience and learn from every one of them. I also would love to, at some stage, do some track and field stuff, to try and relive my sprinting days. I would love to perhaps look at walking and/or running John O Groats to Lands end, or west to east coast one day, and maybe walk Great Wall of China too.
Funniest moments; This year, in May 2017, I came back to running after a bit of lazy time out and had just returned from Cyprus. I ran Beverley 10km and struggled a bit having not trained, I never usually accept anything offered to me by spectators, but this time as it was so hot I took an ice pop offered by a young child. I put it to my mouth and the cut was in the opposite end of the wrapper, and the full ice pop slipped out and landed on my shoe, leaving me with an empty wrapper, then not long afterwards, in the same race, a cow ran across the path in front of me at around 8km. Oh, and while walking to the Great North Run start line this year, me and my cousin found ourselves walking just behind two police horses, just as we decided we should try move aside, one of the horses had what could only be described as a very, very "loose movement" just feet away from us, leaving me rushing to one side and struggling to
retain my breakfast, all this excitement before the run had even begun.
