What is a Badge?

Visual representation of achievement, experience, affiliation and/or interest - ideally distinctive and understood within a community.

Some examples:

What are 'Open Badges'?

Electronic (online) badges

Link to criteria and evidence for award

Have the credibility of the awarding body

Share 'badge clusters' from multiple sources with others on Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.

Provide security and verification can check whether a person was actually awarded a

specific badge

What's the use in HE?

Surface the learning 'hidden' in a transcript

Encourage students to undertake co- and extra-curricular activities Recognise informal learning

Motivate students to complete formative work

Enables students to differentiate themselves from classmates

How could YOU use them?

Think about Badges in your contextAre there skills that students use and develop?

Do you have extra-curricular activities to encourage?

Do you want to draw links between learning and skills demanded by employers/professional bodies?

Are there formative activities that you want students to complete?
