Relationships are comprised of Micro-Expressions

Micro-expressions are subtle, often unintentional or unconscious behaviors that add up to have lasting positive or negative impacts.

Micro-Affirmations

• Encouragement• Smiles, eye contact• Benefit of the doubt• Helpful feedback• Sponsorship and mentoring

Micro-Inequities or Micro-Aggressions

• Frequently interrupting• Discrediting or diminishing

contributions• Consistently forgetting or mispronouncing names• Harsher criticism of work

Scenario 1

Lacey is on a conference call and her coworker Josh mentions in an offhand comment an upcoming assignment their supervisor asked him to take the lead on. Others on the call seem to be familiar with the assignment, but this is the first Lacey has heard of it.

Scenario 2

Jacob has never worked remotely before this and is frustrated with his team. He finds himself constantly being interrupted by other team members who don’t seem to even acknowledge his presence. Jacob’s been partnered on a new project with a coworker, Eliza. Eliza is slow to respond to his emails to meet, is late to their meeting, and exhales her breath when Jacob asks questions.

Building Inclusive Virtual Settings
