February Facts
As we February came to a close, I collected a few facts! Enjoy these while you delve into the wonderful month of March.
February is the shortest month of the year.
The birthstone of February is amethyst.
The flower is the violet or iris.
February comes from an old word meaning purification.
February was a month of early spring cleaning for the Romans.
If you are born in February you are either an Aquarius or Pisces.
In the southern hemisphere, February is the equivalent of August here.
The Super Bowl is America?s largest sporting event and is held in February.
February is the only month that can pass with no full moon. This happened last in 1999 and will happen again in 2018.

The 2017 Missouri State Wrestling Championship was held on February 16th through the 18th at the Mizzou Arena in Columbia. This is the 87th year this event has been put on by the Missouri State High School Ac-tivities Association (MSHSAA). This year two of Polo?s wrestlers qualified to attend state wrestling. These two qualifiers were senior, Gunnar Martin and freshman, Wyatt Segar.
While some students traveled two hours to cheer on our wrestlers, others chose to watch the matches via livestream. After two long days of matches, Gunnar placed second at the 220 weight class and Wyatt didn?t place. Martin was a four time qualifier and three time medalist; 3rd twice and 2nd once. We would like to show appreciation for the hard work and dedication all of the wrestlers had this season.

On Tuesday, February 14, students from Kindergarten to Fourth Grade enjoyed their Valentine?s Day parties. They passed out cards and litt le candies to all their class-mates and indulged in some time away from school work. Though this is something that is normal, have you ever wondered why elementary students have Valentine?s Day Parties?
It?s an American tradition to celebrate holidays in school. Valentine?s Day is cele-brated to promote friendship and kindness. It?s a way for teachers to help their stu-dents learn social skills. It can give kids the opportunity to talk with their peers that they wouldn?t ordinarily talk to. It?s a way for them to make friends and learn the ways to do it. They hand out valentines to every student in the class if they choose to do so, and this can help the students not feel left out. When they leave a personal note for one of their peers, it can help that person feel better about themselves and see that relationships with others can be great. Believe it or not, most students are more ex-cited about receiving the cards than they are about the candy. Since they can get candy any day of the year, the cards are something special in their eyes and it?s some-thing to be cherished.

During the second quarter, when Mrs. Rardon had the 8th grade girls for Literacy Workshop she had them do an essay contest. The three essays that were selected for the contest were from Maggie Martin, Ashley Foster, and Ysee Chorot. On February 16, 2017 some of the girls volunteered to read to Ms. Craig?s 5th grade class. The girls who volunteered were Ashley Foster, Brooke Boydston, Allie Miller, Corryn Baird, Amanda Whitt, Halley Fleener, and Kara Claypole. Arianna Wolf read Ysee?s paper, and Mrs. Rardon read Maggie?s paper.
I interviewed four of the 5th grade students after the girls read the essays, Keegan Earp, Grace Gilmer, Lucas Piper, and Reid Boyd-ston. I asked them what they would do if their social media accounts were hacked. They replied with, ?I would proba-bly tell my parents or a teacher and let them take care of it.? Some said they would call 911 and tell them what was going on or email the social media creators and see if they could fix it.
The next question was, ?After the girls presented their essays, what do you think of social media now?? They re-sponded with, ?We don?t think that the makers of the social media meant for it to be used as a bad way, but in a commu-nication kind of way.? These kids are really smart and pick up on things fast.
I then asked them if someone started spreading rumors about you or a loved one what would you do? They re-sponded with, ?I would tell an adult and try to move past it. If it was my friend I would tell them and their parents and let them handle it.? These students gave some pretty good answers and took a minute to think about them. Kids today usually don?t real-ize the dangers of social me-dia, but Polo?s kids do. We see what happens to peo-ple that are hacked. They could lose important files or could be lead into a state of depression. The internet could be a dark place and also a bright place with rainbows. Always think before you post.
