About the Peacocks

Peacocks are birds that make their nests on the ground and perch on trees.

But did you know that there are 3 types of peacocks?The one is the Indian peacock, another is green peacock,

and the most lesser known is the Congo peacock.The Indian peacock is the National bird of India.It is found in India and Sri Lanka. While the green peacock

breeds in the eastern region of Burma (Myanmar) and Java. The lesser known Congo peacock is visible only in the rain forests of the African continent.

Diet

Peacocks are omnivorous & they eat most plant parts, flower petals, seed heads, insects, arthropods, reptiles, and amphibians.

Feral Populations

The peacock has left captivity and developed populations in parts of India & several parts of the world.

Fast Facts

• When a peahen’s chick is even hardly a day old it can walk, eat & drink on it’s own!

• In the wild, peacocks have a harem of 2-5 females

• Peacocks need company, alone they can get heartbroken

Cultural Significance

Peacocks have a great cultural significance in almost every region.

Hinduism

In Hinduism the peacock is associated with Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of fortune and good luck.

Grecko-Roman Mythology

In Roman Mythology Hera ( Juno) is the one who created the peacock from Argus, whose are seen on the tail feathers of the peacock. They symbolize heaven & the ‘eyes’ of the stars.

The word ‘peacock’ is commonly used to refer both the sexes.

Conclusion

Peacocks are very interesting to me because I’ve seen them in India. They are very beautiful with shades of blue, green, and purple. Did you know that there eyes are shades of blue red and gold ?!
