CHI: Music of Augusta Read ThomasA spectacular evening of music by Augusta Read

Thomas, featuring three major works: Chi for

Imani Winds presents the world premiere

performances of six works created by UChicago

composers Rodrigo Bussad, Pierce Gradone,

Jack Hughes, Joungbum Lee, Timothy Page,

and Igor Santos. Hear how each young

composer both explores and exploits the

sound world of the woodwind quintet.

An exploration and reimagining of the vast

devotional poetry and song forms of the Indian

Subcontinent. Featuring vocalists and a

variety of musical instruments, presenting both

group and solo renditions, as well as guest

artists and dance accompaniment.

09 Early Music EnsembleTUE 7:30 PM | Rockefeller Chapel

Finding Monteverdi: From Mantua to Venice Songs and dances by Gastoldi, Striggio, and

Giaches de Wert, plus works by Gabrieli and

Monteverdi. Music for voices, viols, violin,

recorders, crumhorns, cornettos, and sackbuts.

Students in the Vocal Studies program

present solo works accompanied by a variety

of instruments, and works for small vocal

ensembles from different musical periods.

The Many Faces of Pelléas and MélisandeCome unravel the mysteries of Pelléas et

Mélisande through music and dance with the

Hyde Park School of Dance and UChicago

literary experts. Enjoy selections from the

French Symbolist masterpiece as interpreted

through the music of Fauré, Sibelius, and more.

Celebrate Mother’s Day with an arrangement

A variety of piano, string, and wind groups

made up of students from the Chamber Music

Program perform a collection of masterworks.

A combined concert by the Women’s Ensemble

and Motet Choir with songs from classical and

folk traditions around the world and selections

from different American choral genres.

Two works by Sam Pluta, Assistant Professor

of Composition and Director of the Computer

Music Studio, frame the NME’s final concert

of the season. Works by graduate and

undergraduate composers Rodrigo Bussad,

Tim Page, Kim Kawczinski, Reiny Rolock, and

Noah Kahrs fill out the program.

SUNBeethoven’s NinthJoined by the combined choruses, the USO

culminates the season with a gala presentation

of Ludwig van Beethoven’s final symphonic

masterpiece: the monumental Symphony No. 9 in D minor, with its distinctive fourth movement

that incorporates a hybrid version of Friedrich

Schiller’s 1785 “Ode to Joy”. Chicago soloists

Christine Steyer, Katherine Calcamuggio,

Jesse Donner, and David Govertsen join the

250 musicians on stage.

Joined by special guest musicians, the

Jazz X-tet presents a concert of cutting-edge

works ranging from jazz standards to hip-hop.

An exciting program featuring rarely performed

arrangements of works by John Philip Sousa,

Mozart and others.

1:30 PM | Fulton Recital HallMaster Teacher and Co-Chair of Voice and

Opera at Northwestern University’s Bienen

School of Music, mezzo-soprano Karen

Brunssen leads a master class featuring solo

singers from the UChicago Vocal Studies

program. Ms. Brunssen will coach both art

song and arias, focusing on vocal artistry

from technique through interpretation.
