MitgliederProf. Dr. R. Bauer Universität GrazTCM Cluster
International science network including project partners from Austria (8) and China
DNTIDrugs from Nature Targeting Inflammation
http://www.uibk.ac.at/pharmazie/pharmakognosie/dnti
• NFN project • National science network including 8 project partners from Graz, Innsbruck and Vienna • New anti-inflammatory modes of action • New active natural compounds • Plant propagation via biotechnology
VALERIAN ROOT
Valerianae radixDEFINITIONValerian root consists of the dried, whole or fragmented underground parts of Valeriana officinalis L. s.l., including the rhizome surrounded by the roots and stolons. It contains not less than 5ml/kg of essential oil for the whole drug and not less than 3 ml/kg of essential oil for the cut drug, both calculated with reference to the dried drug and not less than 0.17 per cent of sesquiterpenic acids expressed as valerenic acid (C15H22O2; Mr 234) calculated with reference to the dried drug.
Inhaltsstoffe
• Essential oil (Ph. Eur. > 0.5%)– Monoterpenes – Sesquiterpenes
• Sesquiterpenic acids (Ph. Eur. > 0.17%)– Valerenic acid (R = H)– Acetoxyvalerenic acid (R = CH3COO)– Hydroxyvalerenic acid (R = OH)
• Valepotriates
• Lignans
CH3CH3
R CH3H
COOH
Animal experiments
• Sedative effect– Prolongation of Narcotica-induced effects
• Anxiolytic effect– Elevated-Plus-Maze Test
Cooperation with H. Winterhoff, University of Münster, Germany
• Valerenic acid (VA) modulates GABAA-Receptor: subunits α1β2/3 (Loreclezol-binding pocket)
• Metabolism• Transport across the Blood-Brain Barrier model
Valerenic acid is not only a marker, but an active compound of the drug
Valerenic acid is not the only compound responsible for the acitivity of Valerian root („multitarget actions“)
