Origami Pineapple
Located in the center of a 18th-century garden of the Berrington Hall country estate in Herefordshire, England
Designed to attract visitors to a fundraiser to restore the walled garden
Contemporary Structure
● Metal frame at the core
● Weatherproof pink fabric
● Small geometric stools reflecting the shape of the pavilion
A ring of tension struts stabilizing the structure
A ring of interlinking struts pinned to frame15 radially arrayed segments
Diagonal bracing steel strap in each lower frame
5 steel foundation frame assemblies hidden by finishes
5 locations where frame is omitted to create a doorway
The structure is made of 90 sections
Fabric pulled over and fixed to each rhomboid
Assembled like a jigsaw on site in the walled garden, ultimately taking around
six months to construct.
The artists drew their influence for the structural formation from the geometric shapes
found in the mansion's interior design
The shape was drawn from pineapples which the estate once grew during the Georgian period
Challenges included achieving the perfect flatness of the facets to get the crisp lines
