DAY 8 – 4TH GRADE – SCIENCE
PART II
PERFORMANCE INDICATORS
4.L.5A.1 - Develop models that classify plants and animals
4.L.5A2 - Compare the stages of development of seed plants
LESSON TOPICS
How can you classify PLANTS?
What are some plant life cycles?
How can you classify animals?
What are some animal life cycles?
WHAT ARE SOME PLANT LIFE CYCLES
ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS
• COMPARE AND CONTRAST HOW THE LIFE CYCLE OF
THE PECAN TREE, LIMA BEAN PLANT, AND THE POND
PINE ALIKE AND HOW THEY ARE DIFFERENT?
• WHAT ARE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF FLOWERING
AND NON-FLOWERING PLANTS?
• HOW DO WE CLASSIFY ORGANISMS?
I-CAN STATEMENTS
• I CAN EXPLORE, ILLUSTRATE, AND COMPARE
THE LIFE CYCLES OF SOME PLANTS
• I CAN CLASSIFY PLANTS AS EITHER
FLOWERING OR NON-FLOWERING.
• I CAN DISTINGUISH BETWEEN ANIMALS
THAT ARE VERTEBRATES OR INVERTEBRATES.

ENGAGE ACTIVITY: HOW MANY WAYS CAN YOU CLASSIFY PLANTS?
• MATERIALS:
• LIMA BEANS
• CUP OF WARM WATER
• MASKING TAPE
• PEN
• 2 PLASTIC BAGS
• 2 WET PAPER TOWELS
• ANOTHER PLANT SEE (RADISH SEED ARE USED HERE)
• CAMERA
• RULER
ENGAGE ACTIVITY: HOW MANY WAYS CAN YOU CLASSIFY PLANTS?
1. SOAK THE LIMA BEANS IN WARM WATER FOR 1 HOUR
2. DRY THE LIMA BEANS
3. USE TAPE AND A PEN TO LABEL ONE PLASTIC BAG "LIMA BEANS" AND THE OTHER RADISH (OR WHATEVER
SEED YOU'RE USING)
1. PLACE THE DAMP PAPER TOWELS WITH THE LIMA BEAN AND RADISH SEEDS INTO EACH BAG
2. PLACE BOTH BAGS ON A SUNNY WINDOWSILL OR IN A LIGHTED TERRARIUM
4. COLLECT DATA
1. OBSERVE THE SEEDS EVERY OTHER DAY FOR A WEEK
2. USE THE CAMERA TO COLLECT, RECORD, AND ANALYZE INFORMATION
3. USE A RULER TO MEASURE THE HEIGHT OF THE SEEDLINGS
4. USE THE TABLE TO KEEP A WRITTEN RECORD (SAMPLE TABLE NEXT SLIDE)
5. EXPLAIN YOUR RESULTS
1. COMPARE THE LIFE CYCLES OF THE TWO PLANTS AND SHARE THE INFORMATION WITH SOMEONE

TREE, THE LIMA BEAN PLANT, AND THE POND
PINE ALIKE? HOW ARE THEY DIFFERENT?
