POLYVINYL CHLORIDE

WHAT IS POLYVINYL CHLORIDE

• Abbreviated as PVC• The third-most widely

produced plastic• Thermoplastic• Pure polyvinyl chloride is

white, brittle solid

HISTORY

• First discovered in 1835 by French chemist, Henri Victor Regnault

• Then in 1872 by German chemist, Eugen Baumann

CHEMICAL THINGS

• PVC is a polymer which is made from monomers called vinyl chloride.

• It is formed by the kind of polymerisation called “Addition”

• Its IUPAC name is called poly(1-chloroethene)

MANUFACTURING PROCESS

• Extrusion• The shaft (which is

called "Screw") in the cylinder is rotated to push resin forward

• Resin is melt by heat and kneaded

• While it is pushed forward, and then extruded from the outlet dies.

MANUFACTURING PROCESS

• Thermal• Sheet or film

manufactured by the calendaring technology or the extrusion technology is heated to soften.

• Air in the metal mold is sucked out to press the melt material at an ambient pressure

• This is called "Vacuum Molding", which is used for the production of thin packaging material such as the egg package

MANUFACTURING PROCESS

• Injection• This is a

technology to inject melt resin into the metal mold by pressure

• best suitable for production of PVC goods with three-dimensional structure such as sealed containers
