DESCRIPTION

Again, I have had to use pdf rather than ppt so the notes are missing. Sorry about that. The powerpoint version will be on Geojuice later. I was honoured to be invited up to Oban to give this talk to a group of Higher Grade students from "the west". Great kids and a great day.

• Rural Scotland, areas with histories of ruraldepression and population decline that are now, oncetheir age and sex structures are taken into account,showing positive natural increase with above averagefertility and low mortality;

• Lothian and Aberdeen and their eastern Scottishhinterlands, cities now characterised by low mortality,high in migration, and very low fertility, helped by thehigh proportion of un-partnered adults, high housingcosts, and higher than average numbers of women notonly in employment but ‘employment focused’ (indicatedby working over 37 hours per week);

• Greater Glasgow, which continues to suffer from veryhigh levels of mortality, the highest in Scotland, Britainand much of Europe and high out migration, whichcombine with a low birth rate and low in migration toproduce a situation of significant population decline.
