• PPS is difficult to work with…• PPS has no “shop” programs• PPS only cares about preparing kids to go

to college• Connections to trades programs only exist

at Benson Tech (CTE flagship)

Making it happen…

PPS…Reserved carpentry shop at District OfficeSecured approval from Risk ManagementCoordinated logistics with partnersDeveloped marketing materialsRecruited through career coordinatorsSchedule bi-weekly check-in meetings w/ partners Managed the 8-week program

PPS CENTRAL OFFICE –MAINTENANCE CARPENTRY WORKSHOP

• Maintenance worker’s schedules allow for after-school programming in space

• Project is set up so that Maintenance still has access to supplies

• PPS Central Office is a good central location with access to public transportation nearby

Students learn

• Correct hammer technique to use a framing hammer

• How to pull nails and dismantle

• How to measure correctly and frame a 6’x8’ stud wall

• How to create supports to strengthen overall project structure

ELECTRICALNECA/IBEW

Students learn • How to read an electrical

schematic

• How to wire a plug, a light, and a three-way switch

• The level of algebra needed for electrical work

PLUMBING

Plumbers/Steamfitters UA290

Students learn • How to read a plumbing

schematic

• How to cut PVC piping accurately

• Install a vent and sink water supply with PVC pipe in to the framed wall

SHEET METAL

Sheet Metal Institute

Students learn • The history of sheet metal

and all opportunities in sheet metal – HVAC, Architectural

• How to join sheet metal pieces together and fasten to create vent

• How to accurately measure and cut out register opening in vent

• How to install vent in to the framed wall

• The level of trigonometry needed in sheet metal work

CARPENTRY-DRYWALL INSTALLATION

Students learn • How to work as a team

to measure out areas on the drywall that will need to be cut i.e.-plug-ins, light switch, heating vent

• How to cut the drywall

• How to hang the drywall and nail appropriately to place on the project wall
