ObjectivesWe are learning to…

Distinguish between chemical and physical properties.

We will be successful when we can…Identify examples of chemical and physical properties.

density in a column!

MatterAll matter can be divided into pure

substances or mixtures.

Pure SubstancesPure substances are anything that is made

of only one type of atom or molecule.

2 types: elements & compounds

ElementsElements: Substance that is made of only one type of atom.

Example: atoms of gold (Au)

CompoundsCompounds: Substance that is made of only one type of molecule.

Example: molecules of water (H2O)

What are Mixtures?Pure Substances = elements and

compounds

Mixtures are everything else.

Formed when different types and amounts of

elements or compounds are physically stirred or

mixed together.

Can be separated with physical changes.

They never have a chemical formula or recipe.

Sometimes you can see the different ingredients in

a mixture, but sometimes you cannot.
