PREPARING FOR CHAPTER ONE ESSAY

You will now construct an ALAAL paragraph during the next 15-20mins.

Remember BABOP as a way of extending your analysis:

Because – a straightforward explanation will follow

Also – by using this you are sustaining your point (making it last)

But – further detail is coming, possibly a contradiction

Or – you are going to off er an alternative

Perhaps – you are not sure, but it’s a possibility because of a certain word or idea

USING THE ‘UNDER THE MAGNIFYING GLASS’ GRIDS YOU COMPLETED

YESTERDAY…

See ‘Mathematical grace’ example if you need a reminder.

ALAAL STRUCTURE TO FOLLOW

You will write one more ALAAL paragraph & complete a plan for the essay question:

How effective is the opening chapter of the novel?

CNY HOMEWORK

Groups will be given a focus area from chapter one and plan how they would write a paragraph for that focus area.

Each group should:1. construct a TOPIC SENTENCE (referencing McEwan’s

name, directly answering the question & introducing the paragraph of analysis to come).

2. Select the best line from the chapter that could be used as the main quote for an ALAAL paragraph.

3. Select a supporting quote from chapter one that could be embedded in ALAAL analysis.

4. Bullet point between 3–5 ideas of how you can build analysis and support the point of your topic sentence while answering the question.

INITIAL PLANNING WILL BE DONE IN GROUPS.

1. The use of literary devices2. Imagery3. Pace and urgency related to the

balloon incident (sentence structuring and organisation)

4. Joe’s retrospective viewpoint

ESSAY AREAS OF FOCUS

Introduction – fully written – what goes into an introduction?

4 Planned paragraphs (on each of the areas listed on the previous slide) with TS, Main Q, supporting Q to embed, 3-5 points for analysis.

One full ALAAL on any of the 4 areas of focus (TS, main Q with full written analysis to include one embedded quote).

Conclusion (judgement) – fully written

SUMMARY: CONSTRUCTION OF YOUR ESSAY PLAN

Ask one question which could be directed towards Ian McEwan about his fi rst chapter. Perhaps consider:

• Character• The event• The plot

• Narrative viewpoint• McEwan’s style
