You will now construct an ALAAL paragraph during the next 15-20mins.

Remember BABOP as a way of extending your analysis:

Because – a straightforward explanation will follow

Also – by using this you are sustaining your point (making it last)

But – further detail is coming, possibly a contradiction

Or – you are going to off er an alternative

Perhaps – you are not sure, but it’s a possibility because of a certain word or idea

USING THE ‘UNDER THE MAGNIFYING GLASS’ GRIDS YOU COMPLETED

Groups will be given a focus area from chapter one and plan how they would write a paragraph for that focus area.

Each group should:1. construct a TOPIC SENTENCE (referencing McEwan’s

name, directly answering the question & introducing the paragraph of analysis to come).

2. Select the best line from the chapter that could be used as the main quote for an ALAAL paragraph.

3. Select a supporting quote from chapter one that could be embedded in ALAAL analysis.

4. Bullet point between 3–5 ideas of how you can build analysis and support the point of your topic sentence while answering the question.

INITIAL PLANNING WILL BE DONE IN GROUPS.
