Hi! It’s Jeni, from In Color Order, here to share my latest tutorial for the Fat Quarter Gang, Fabric Envelopes!

These are so easy to make, and I’ve included two sizes for you to choose from! The smaller size is perfect for holding business cards, loyalty cards, or any other small things! The larger size is great for keeping coupons, re-ciepts or your grocery list!

I choose a bright, fresh mix of prints from a variety of Art Gallery collections! Ready to sew? Let’s get started!

Finished Sizes:

Coupon Envelope (large) - 8” x 4.75”Card Envelope (small) - 4.5” x 3”

Materials:

- 8 Fat Quarters: Squared Fashion (Paradise), Innocent Charm Rose (Coquette), Flo-ralism Fresh Grass (Modernology), Passionate Spirit Teal (Summerlove), Pink Orchid Sparkles (Paradise), Imperial Fuchsia (Bazaar Style), Millefiori Dark (Bespoken), and Fashion Mood Intense (Bespoken).

- 1/4 yard Medium-weight fusible interfacing

- Coordinating Thread

- Snaps (optional)

Notes: 1/4” seam allowance unless otherwise noted.

This is enough fabric to make both sizes! You can also choose from two different clo-sures, stitching the envelope partially closed, or using snaps!

Patchwork is also optional! You could create envelopes with only a two fabrics, or with strips, squares, or even a tiny quilt block on the back! Mix it up and have fun! :)

Instructions for Coupon Envelope:

1. Cut the following:

From each fat quarter - cut (1) 1.5”x12” strip (total of 8 strips)From Passionate Spirit Teal (interior) - cut (1) 8.5”x12” rectangleFrom interfacing - cut (1) 8.5”x12” rectangle

2. Arrange all 8 strips side by side, in any order you’d like.

3. Sew strips together along the long edges. Press seams open. Trim to 8.5”x12”.

4. Fuse interfacing to the wrong side of the patchwork piece according to manufacturer’s instructions. Set aside.

5. To create the flap shape, take the interior rectangle and mark 2” from each corner on one of the short sides. Mark another 2” on the long sides for those same two corners.

6. Line up your acrylic ruler on the two marks and cut across with your rotary cutter. Repeat on the other corner.

7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 for the patchwork piece.

8. Place patchwork piece and interior piece and place them right sides together.

9. Pin, and stitch around the entire thing, leaving a 3” opening on one of the long sides for turning. Backstitch at start and finish. Clip corners and turn right side out, gently pushing out the corners.

10. Press well and top stitch with a 1/8” seam allowance around the entire piece, closing up the opening you used for turning.

11. With the patchwork side facing down, and fold the bottom up 4.5”. Pin in place.

12. Sew along both sides to form the envelope. Don’t forget to backstitch!

13. To finish it off, sew (with a very small seam allowance) along the top of the flap to help it stay closed.

Voila, you’re done! :)
