Victorian Christmas Decoration Day

After Class 2’s visit to prepare Wimpole Hall for Christmas the Year 3 & 4 children helped to lead the school around a series of exciting craft activities, making Victorian decorations for school and home. The children were challenged to use and apply a wide variety of skills. They were grouped vertically to that the older children could help the younger ones.

1. Using evergreens willow hoops and ribbons to make garlands and kissing boughs

2. Making and decorating Christmas crackers

3. Making fashionable Victorian faces

4. Making dolly peg angel and Father Christmas hanging tree decorations

5. Decorating and threading wooden beads on ribbons for the tree

6. Making and baking salt-dough wreathe tree decorations

7. Threading pop-corn and cranberry garlands for the tree

8. Tying bundles of cinnamon sticks to hang on the tree

The Andy Goldsworthy Landscape Art Day

1. Working collaboratively with CJ on the large Andy Goldsworthy Sculpture

2. Working in pairs, with a ‘Buddy’ on a Collage Landscape

3. Weaving on a branch loom to create an individual piece of art

As follow-up to their visit to the Henry Moore Foundation as part of their Art

Topic of Sculpture in the Environment, Class 2 once again led another

whole school art day. CJ Mahony, a talented young sculptor from

Cambridge came to give further inspiration and practical help.

This time the school was divided into 3 vertical groups for the three

activities.

• Focusing on the skill of mixing colours using resources in

stock (both powder and liquid paint)

• Checking all stock and ordering new materials where

necessary e.g. art pencils and paint brushes

• Continuing development of all the skills and improving

standards at all levels

• Developing innovative ways to display children’s work

• Continuing to keep the school’s profile in the public eye

with press coverage and displays
