ROAD MARKING PAINTS

PREFACE

Proper thermoplastic applications provide the public withreliable, long-term pavement markings that enhance thesafety of our roads.

Without a practical understanding ofthe necessary application requirements, however, we willcontinue to wonder why the results we attain may notmatch our expectations.

Successful thermoplastic applications are the result of ahappy marriage of chemistry, material handling techniques, surface preparation, application techniques and weather.

Each of these elements require sound judgment, planningand execution by everyone involved in the project.

BERGER Paints has and always will be committed to supply the highest quality pavement markings in the country.

DRIVING SAFETY THROUGH PRODUCT EXCELLENCE

5. LONG LASTING: The normal service life of a liquid conventional road marking paint ranges from one month to maximum of six months; on an average, if we say that the life of liquid road marking paints is 3 months. The normal service life in case of Thermoplastic road marking paints is 5 years.

DRIVING SAFETY THROUGH PRODUCT EXCELLENCE

• 6. MORE REFLECTIVITY: Since this paint has Intermix Ballotini Glass Beads in addition to the drop on glass beads, the reflectivity of the paint will not be much affected as the time goes due to the inherent property of the paint itself.

DRIVING SAFETY THROUGH PRODUCT EXCELLENCE

• 7. MORE WHITENESS: Since the content of the resins are optimized, and all the raw material used is sourced from the world class reputed manufacturers, there is a marked difference in the whiteness and there will be no tendency of the fading away of the whiteness.

• 8. MORE THICKNESS OF THE COATING: The thickness of the thermoplastic coating is a minimum of 2.5mm to 3 mm, which allows the paint to last longer on the road.

• 9. EASE OF APPLICATION: The thermoplastic material is applied by a special machine, which is available with us, and which can be either given to you on hire basis, or can be bought by you. The material is very easy to apply by this machine.

DRIVING SAFETY THROUGH PRODUCT EXCELLENCE

• 10. STRAIGHT LINE & SMOOTH FINISH: The application equipment is designed in such a way that the finish of the surface is excellent as compared to the conventional system of brushing.

• 11. MORE AREA CAN BE PAINTED PER DAY: Since the machine works faster as compared to the manual operation by brushes, more surface area can be painted in a day, thereby saving on the labour cost.

• 12. COVERAGE: Although we cannot compare the coverage of this coating with the conventional system of liquid painting, still, if we compare the cost of paint, labour and time involved in painting after every 3 months, the coverage comes out to be excellent if it is spread over a period of 5 years.

• Practically, the coverage of the thermoplastic road marking paints is 5 kg per sq.mtr.

DRIVING SAFETY THROUGH PRODUCT EXCELLENCE

• 13. LUMINANCE DURING THE DAY AND NIGHT: The retro reflectivity of the paint during the night is excellent; this phenomenon is absent in case of liquid road line paint.

• 14. Non Bleeding No solvent hence no discoloration on tar roads. Excellent adhesion on asphalt/bitumen roads: Thermal bonding with the asphalt.

• 15. Excellent abrasion resistance Glass beads / aggregate system

• 16. Feasibility of physical warning Rumble Strips / Profile Markings

• 17. SHORT DRYING TIME: The thermoplastic paint dries in 10 minutes, and is open to heavy traffic immediately after drying.

DRIVING SAFETY THROUGH PRODUCT EXCELLENCE

• 18. SOLVENT FREE: No hazardous solvent

• 19. EXCELLENT ABRASION RESISTANCE

• 20. COST EFFECTIVE: Comparing to the repeated costs of application including the cost of labour, cost of material, the cost of thermoplastic road marking paints is much less. More details can be provided on request.

APPLICATION

• Material should be heated to 180 – 200 Deg C in a pre-heater with constant and adequate homogenization

– Ensures uniform dispersion of the thermoplastic ingredients– Oil jacketed mixers are recommended for control heating which

otherwise may lead to product discolouration and binder disintegration.

• Transfer the same to the application machine and continue homogenization and check for temperature of 180–200 °C

– Lower temperatures would result in poor bonding with tar surface

• Check for color, change in color implies that material has been scorched and should not be applied

– Change in color indicates a breakdown of the raw material

APPLICATION (contd…)• Drop on glass beads should be immediately dropped onto

surface to ensure adherence upto a depth of 50 – 60 % – Too low penetrations - reduction in life of initial retro-reflectivity– Too high penetrations – loss of initial retro-reflectivity

• Ensure proper thickness (2-3mm) to ensure that the material holds adequate heat – Vital for long life, proper glass bead adhesion and good thermal

bonding

• Constant monitoring of temperature and frequent agitation vital during laying of material

• Material should not be heated above 220 Deg C nor held for over 6 hours at 180 Deg C and above

DO’S AND DONT’SDO’S

• Ensure clean and dry pavement before application

• Ensure pavement and air temperature above 10 Deg.C.

• Apply recommended primer for concrete and aged asphalt roads

• Ensure residual removal of primer prior to thermoplastic application

• Verify material temperature and calibrate kettle thermometer

• Apply material at proper bonding temperature as per recommendation

• Monitor drop on glass bead application and embedment

• Maintain daily application and inspection records

DO’S AND DONT’SDONT’S

• Do not over heat the material than specified temperature range

• Do not heat the material continuously for more than 4 hours as over heating may lead to darkening and scorching of the material

• Do not mix alkyd and hydrocarbon thermoplastic in kettle.

• Avoid burner flame contact directly to the material vessel surface

• Do not apply thermoplastic when the substrate is wet

• Yellowness Index (YI) = 100 * (1.28 X - 1.06 Z) ----------------------------- Y• X, Y & Z are tristimulus value of colour

Product Limitations

• It’s a “thermoplastic”– Softens on heat and hence susceptible to dirt

pick up

• Poor solvent / oil / diesel resistance– Softens on exposure, increasing the dirt pick up

• Not suited for congested traffic zones, stop lines, speed breakers owing to above

• Energy Intensive• Safety hazard

THERMOLINE (PC 2164)

• Aliphatic hydrocarbon based retro-reflective thermoplastic road marking

• Confirms to BS 3262 specification

• Fast drying properties

• Excellent adhesion to asphalt / bitumen roads

• Good exterior durability

Directions for use

Heat the material to 180-200°C in the pre-heater with adequate agitation till the material becomes a homogenized liquid.

Ensure that the road surface is clean, free from dust and moisture.Heavy deposits of paint require removal.

For aged asphalt roads and concrete roads application of a special primer coat is recommended for proper bonding of the material with the road surface.

Ensure that the primer is thoroughly dry and void of solvent prior to application of the thermoplastic material.

Ensure temperature of 180 – 200°C and adequate agitation during application.

Do not hold thermoplastic above 180°C for more than 6 hours.Do not heat the material above 220°C at any in time.Change in colour indicates that the material has been scorched

owing to overheating and needs to be discarded.Drop-on glass beads must be immediately deposited after

thermoplastic application

General Warranty and Shelf Life Information

The materials will meet the requirements of the specification for a period of up to 1 year.

The thermoplastic will melt uniformly with no evidence of skins or unmelted particles for this 1-year period.

No additional straining should be necessary when loading although it is considered good practice to ensure trouble free operation.

Application/Performance –These products have been proven to meet certain standards of

durability and retro-reflectance although without proper application, we can not guarantee any material will meet any minimum standards. These materials are often part of a binder and bead package, which must be applied properly to obtain satisfactory results.

These are general warranty provisions and are intended as a rough guideline only; any government specification may override these conditions of warranty, which in case these become void.
