Roof anchors and flashings

Menzies Metal Products

Typical roof anchor Flat roof application

Roof anchor for pitched metal roof

Roof anchors are just what they sound like, they are simply anchor points. Sometimes for fall protection, sometimes to anchor equipment. Roof Anchors are commonplace in the window washing industry. Window washers descending a building side as they work will tie off to roof anchors. In window cleaning a minimum of two anchors will be used for each worker. One anchor will be used to support the worker directly tied back to their harness. Additional anchors will be used to support their suspended equipment.

Leave your fear of heights at home

• They are also used to anchor antennae or other types of towers. Obviously multiple roof anchors are required for this.

• Anchors are used on both flat and pitched roofs. They are most common on flat roofs. Following is an illustration of a finished flat roof with roof anchors.

Roof anchors installed

You can see that the roof anchors need to be flashed to be properly installed, since they penetrate whatever membrane or roofing material. It can be done well or done poorly.

This is an example of ‘doing poorly’.

It can also be done well with the right flashing. We have that flashing.
