Introduction

Bmd is a specialised architectural visualisation office, founded in 2002 by Peter Hoste (1970, BE) and KyraFrankort (1974, NL). They work for a variety of clients, from renowned architects such as Mecanoo, MVRDV and Claus en Kaan to innovative engineers as Ney Poulissen, and from high-quality developers such as Vervoordt r.e. to fresh upcoming artists like Nick Ervinck. It’s this variety of clients and work that has given them the opportunity to explore the boundaries of visualisation. Their work was recently rewarded with the 2010 Master Award for visualisation in the category ‘Architecture Exterior’ announced by Ballistic Publishing.

The different backgrounds of both founders results in a refreshing view on visualisation. Peter has a graphic design background, working in the music industry, designing record sleeves, while Kyra, as a trained architect, worked at various Dutch architectural offices, before joining forces with Peter and co-founding bmd. They experience the crossover between the various disciplines as an enrichment of their work, taking their inspiration from graphics, art, music, film and photography, rather than from the ‘3D renderworld’. Images with the atmosphere of a film noir, the colors and staging of an Edward Hopper painting or the out of focus quality of an Olivo Barbieri photograph, are some examples. Every design has its own context, its own philosophy, and therefore the need for its own visual language. Bmd doesn’t represent a certain style but likes to approach each project with fresh eyes, looking for the specific character and qualities of the design itself. Since the architect represents those design qualities, he takes a vital role in the visualisation process. It’s in the interaction that the image is born.
