DESCRIPTION

Expanding Presence Through Outreach (A part of the Rural Pre-Conference: http://www.nlada.org/Training/Train_Annual/2008_Rural_PreConference) Outreach is one key component of most legal aid programs' service delivery model. Community education and other outreach is one way in which a program can be proactive rather than reactive in the face of limited resources. Rural and remote areas served by legal aid program present unique challenges in terms of outreach. Effective outreach strategies are one way a program can increase their presence in remote locations. This session will focus on innovative uses of outreach around the country and will offer participants an opportunity to share what works well within their program. Kate Bladow, NPADO Coordinator with Pro Bono Net; Christine Mandiloff, Staff Attorney, Montana Legal Services Association; Deb House, Associate Director, Legal Aid of East Tennessee

• People who have more complex problems are better educated initially about their situations and legal remedies, freeing up time for MLSA staff.

More benefits of outreach

• People have access to legal information no matter where they live.

• Gives staff more resources for clients.

• Outreach tools, which are easily updated when the law changes or new content is developed, allow MLSA to respond quickly to client needs.
