GABION WALLS AT SATARA –KOLHAPUR ROAD MAHARASHTRA,INDIA

Problem National Highway 4, running between Mumbai,Pune-

Satara,Kolhapur to Kagal Maharashtra State Border is an important

highway in western Maharashtra. To improve the National Highways

network throughout the country, the Govt of India announced the

Golden Quadrilateral Project and entrusted its implementation to

NHAI. The four laning of Satara-Kolhapur to Maharashtra state bor-

der section was awarded to Maharashtra State Road Development

Corporation(MSRDC) by NHAI. The Project consisted of four laning

of highway, construction of new bridges, culverts, widening of exist-

ing bridges, construction of fly-overs and sub-ways at congested

junctions, service roads etc.

MSRDC approached Maccaferri for retention of the sides of ap-

proach embankments as well as wing walls from Kolhapur to

Kanegaon which was designated as Package 3 of this Project. The

original soil present at the site was clay.It was feared that the

hydraulic forces existing in the site may cause instability for the

retaining structures. There was also the probability of immediate

settlement and consolidation settlement .

The major work was the construction of wing walls for the Bridges

across River Warana and Ghunki which was existing in the stretch

between Satara and Kolhapur. The properties of the existing

foundation soil were γ =17 KN/m3, φ =0 degrees, c =40 Kn/m2. The

maximum height of wall was approximately 13m.

Solution Conventional Structures like Concrete walls were ruled out since it

may require deep foundation because of the existence of the clay.

So,Gabion Walls were adopted as the best alternative as they are

flexible ,permeable and which would make the structure more stable.

As Gabions are free draining by nature, the excess pore water pressure

gets dissipated.

Since the existing soil is found to have poor shear parameters, a

foundation improvement scheme was carried out to a depth of 2m

below Ground level to get good factor of safety in sliding, bearing and

also overall stability. The properties of the replaced soil are γ =20 kN/

m3, φ= 34 degrees & c =0 kN/m2. The structure was designed with

consideration of seismic co-efficients of αh =0.04 & αv =0.02

assuming an importance factor of 1.5.

Present Status of the Structure

All Structures were completed in June 2003. The Walls were built with a very good speed. This area occasionally experiences flash floods

which is the most critical condition for any retaining structure. The Gabion walls has successfully withstood all adverse conditions . The client

and the contractor found the cost –effectiveness of the system using Gabions and the easiness with which it can be constructed at any time of

the season.
