TRANSCRIPT

SCIENCE – THIRD GRADE Monday, May 18 – Friday, May 22

PURPOSE

3-LS4-4 New Material I can describe and analyze the solutions to problems when an environment changes and how the types of plants and animals that live there may change.

WATCH

Monday – PBS Learning: Evolution of Camouflage Tuesday – Crash Course Kids: Living Things Change Optional: • Study Jams slideshow: Animal Adaptations • Study Jams slideshow: Plant Adaptations

PRACTICE

Monday – After viewing the Real World Connection, record what you notice and wonder about the photographs. What questions do you have? Watch the Evolution of Camouflage video. Tuesday – Think about the real world connection photo. What do you think would happen to this insect if its environment began to change? Watch Crash Course Kids: Living Things Change. Wednesday – Create a fact/opinion chart. Read “Adaptations” article. Write 3 facts and 3 opinions on your chart after reading “Adaptations.” Thursday – Read Animals Adapt to Their Environment. Think about the real world connection photos. Describe the adaptation of the insects.

DISCUSS

Monday – What do you wonder about the photos? What can you learn from the photographs? What are some questions you have about the photos? Tuesday – Explain what adaptation means. What type of environment would the praying mantis from the Real World Connection photos live in based on the adaptations? Why would the two insects have different adaptations? Wednesday – What caused the growth in population of the gray and black peppered moth? Besides adapting to environmental changes, why might an animal adapt? Thursday - Describe the animal adaptations of the praying mantis in the Real World Connection photos. Why do you think these insects adapted to their environment?

PRODUCT

Friday – After studying changing environments and the effect on plants and animals this week, answer the question using the RAP writing strategy. Use any resources from the week and your science knowledge to answer the question. Question: Based on what you have studied about animal and plant responses to changing environments, what problems might arise for the red fox if it became an inhabitant of a tundra region?

Red Fox Tundra Screen-Free Activities Monday: Real World Connection Photograph

Screen-Free Activities

Draw a Diagram – Think about the biomes (tundra, rainforest, desert, savanna, etc.) on the Earth. Choose an animal or plant from that biome. Draw a picture. Label any adaptations the plant or animal has to meet its needs in the environment. Describe how the adaptation helps the plant or animal meet its needs.

Key Vocabulary Review

Creative Writing: Imagine you could have an animal adaptation. Write a story about how the adaptation will affect your life as a human! What amazing things will you be able to do? When your story is done, draw an illustration to show you with your adaptation.

STEAM Challenge: Create a NEW species of animal with at least 2 adaptations you learned about. Sketch your drawing and name the new species. Label the parts. Then gather materials you have at your house to build a replica of your NEW species.

Choose a key word from this week.

Key Words: adaptation, environment, camouflage

Complete a graphic organizer about the word you chose.
